Plowed fields, "Les Sillons", F574Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A freshly turned field occupies almost the entire picture, crossed by furrows that converge towards a thin line of trees and houses. Under a blue sky laden with white clouds, a few peasants and tools appear tiny facing the expanse of the earth.

Look at the work

The plowed land becomes a sea of matter under the sky of Arles

The very low viewpoint pushes the horizon towards the upper third. The strips of earth start from the lower angles, change color and lead towards the central silhouettes, giving the field ample depth.

Van Gogh applies the thick paint in all directions: loops, commas and broken lines describe the upturned clods. The clouds take up this material lighter, creating an echo between the ocher ground and the blue sky.

Champs plowed, also called Les Sillons, is an oil on canvas of 72.5 × 92.5 cm painted in Arles in September 1888. The work F574/JH1586 is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under the number s0040V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition is based on a simple contrast: an immense ocher earth moving under a more open blue sky. The rhythm of the brushstrokes replaces the descriptive detail and gives the plowing a real physical presence.

01

The furrows organize depth without a regular line

Each band advances in a slightly different direction. Their convergence draws the eye towards the peasants, while retaining the real irregularity of turned over soil.

02

The thickness of the paint materializes the clods of earth

The impasto captures the light and makes the field almost tactile. Van Gogh varies brown, beige, green, purple and yellow instead of treating the soil as a uniform mass.

03

White clouds lighten a composition dominated by the field

Their light relief crosses the blue in small separate groups. They respond to thick touches of the ground, but open up a cooler space above the horizon.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F574/JH1586, the alternative title Les Sillons and inventory s0040V1962 distinguish this large field of Arles from the plowed landscapes painted later in Saint-Rémy.

Letter

Van Gogh considers this painting calmer than others

He writes to Theo that his brother should like plowed fields because the painting is quieter. He hopes this quality will make it easier to sell, but she couldn't find a buyer.

Yellow house

The painting was intended for his new home in Arles

Van Gogh wanted to hang it in the Yellow House, where he had just moved for a week. He already thought of his paintings as a set for the pieces he was preparing.

Frame

He orders a white fir frame matched to the colors

The museum's instructions specify that it chooses light wood to accompany the range of the painting. This detail shows the attention paid to the final presentation of the work.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the converging furrows, the thick clods, the small farmers in the center, the green edge on the right, the frieze of houses and the very material white clouds.

  • The wide furrows that start from the foreground
  • The thick keys describing the upturned earth
  • Tiny workers near the horizon
  • The green stripe intact on the right edge
  • White clouds in relief against the blue sky
