Look at the work

Light descends the path while pine trees form a corridor towards the sea

The path begins largely at the lower edge, then narrows to the small blue opening at the bottom. The inclined trunks and masses of needles frame this escape without forming a regular vault; vegetation seems to grow freely around the passage.

The sun reaches the path in yellow, pink and cream patches, interrupted by blue and purple shadows. On the sides, very varied green touches describe the pines without detailing each branch.

Perspective is not only based on the narrowing of the path: it arises from the alternation of gray areas and bursts of light all the way to the sea.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A vertical format tuned to trees

The height of the canvas extends the trunks and gives the impression that the gaze must raise and then descend towards the path. The path, however, prevents the composition from becoming purely frontal.

02

Colorful shadows that build the ground

Blues, mauves and greens respond to the sun's yellows. These contrasts outline the irregularities of the path more effectively than a brown or gray model.

03

A motif of the Normandy coast in 1882

Monet stayed in Pourville with his family and also worked in the neighboring village of Varengeville. Christie's specifies that Durand-Ruel bought this painting directly from the artist in October 1882.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W799 is used. The real WebP measures 1765 × 2200 px and retains the native definition of the source, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the path irregular and alive

Its edges are not symmetrical and its light changes in small areas. A path that is too smooth would make the natural character of the site disappear.

Color02

Differentiate greens from pine trees

Olive green, emerald, blue and brown should remain noticeable. This variety separates vegetation planes and avoids a uniform dark wall.

Matter03

Keep the sea gap very small

The blue of the background catches the eye precisely because it takes up little space. Enlarging it would weaken the depth created by the corridor of trees.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Christie's documents Allée de sapins in Varengeville, oil on canvas from 1882, 73 × 60 cm, signed and dated lower left and listed Wildenstein 799.

Collection01

A painting passed through Durand-Ruel in 1882

After purchasing from Monet, the work entered the collection of Catholina Lambert then joined Durand-Ruel in New York before moving to the Wilbur family.

Site02

Varengeville is located west of Pourville

The village offers Monet cliffs, a church by the sea and wooded paths. Here, the sea remains only glimpsed at the end of the alley.

Composition03

The pines give depth and monumentality

Christie's highlights the role of the very dark tree on the left: it moves strongly in the foreground and pushes the path, sky and sea backwards.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 799 version
  • The path going down towards the sea
  • Large vertical pines
  • The sun plates on the ground
