Rose Alley, Givernyhand painted reproduction

A yellow path advances under a succession of arches almost swallowed up by rose bushes. In this horizontal version, Monet contrasts the luminous gap of the path with a dense vault of dark reds, greens and purples, worked in nervous impasto.

Look at the work

The yellow path opens a depth in the middle of almost impenetrable vegetation

The perspective starts from the lower edge, widens into a yellow mass then narrows under the first arch. The structures of the garden are not traced: they appear in blue-green and dark brown curves, interrupted by the flowers and foliage passing in front of them.

Garnet reds and deep greens dominate the vault. Yellowish whites open a small gap in the upper center, while pinks, oranges and a few blues awaken the sides. The thick material gives the garden an almost tactile presence.

The path does not simply cross the garden: it becomes the only stable landmark in a painting where rose bushes, hoops and shade recompose with each touch.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of L'Allée des rosiers, Giverny - Claude Monet
01

A perspective held by the yellow mass

The path must narrow without becoming a geometric shape. Its olive yellows and ochres remain irregular, mixed with the greens and reds of the borders.

02

Hoops visible in fragments

The blue-green and brown curves are cut by the foliage. Redrawing them in continuous lines would make this late version artificially accurate.

03

A dark but colorful vault

Shadows combine garnet, green, purple and blue. A uniform brown or black would remove the depth and vibration of the impasto.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The dark arch and the gap of lightThe close-up reveals blue-green curves under an accumulation of reds, browns and yellows. The small, light opening gives depth to the vault.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Inventory 5090 of the Marmottan Monet Museum

This oil on canvas of 81 × 100 cm is dated 1920 -1922, unsigned and listed under the number Wildenstein 1939.

Giverny02

The driveway located as an extension of the house

Monet paints the rose bushes of his own garden, a motif close to his late Japanese Bridges through repetition, plant invasion and freedom of touch.

Transmission03

The legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

Remaining in the studio and not exhibited during the painter's lifetime, the work entered the museum with the legacy of Michel Monet, son of the artist, in 1966.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The gradual tightening of the yellow aisle
  • The arches preserved discontinuous under the rose bushes
  • Shadows constructed with multiple colors, without uniform black
  • Red and green impastos maintained without supersaturation
