Look at the work

Spring branches seen up close

The trunk enters the image from below and divides into branches that run through almost the entire canvas. There is no horizon or ground: the branches seem to float in front of the blue of the sky. The flowers alternate between pink buds, white corollas and small green touches.

Van Gogh takes up one of his favorite subjects, flowering trees, with a framing inspired by the Japanese prints he collected. The dark contours, flat areas of color and branches cut by the edges transform the natural pattern into a very constructed decorative composition.

The painting celebrates a birth by the first tree that flowers in spring, a direct symbol of new life.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Reproduction depends on the fineness of the branches, the freshness of the blue and the variety of the small flowers.

01

Japanese framing

The branches cross the surface without a classic vanishing point. Some are cut by the edges, as in a print observed up close.

02

Blue as space

The turquoise background is not uniform: slight variations of touch give it depth and light without distracting attention from the flowers.

03

Detailed flowering

Each group combines off-white, pink, green and brown outline. Open buds and flowers prevent mechanical repetition of the pattern.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Van Gogh Museum dates the work from February 1890, in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and links it directly to the birth of Vincent Willem van Gogh.

Gift

For Vincent Willem

Theo and Johanna have just had a son, named Vincent in homage to his uncle. The artist intended this large flowering branch for them.

Inspiration

The view of Japanese prints

Van Gogh borrows from the prints the clean outline, the almost flat background and the way of bringing the branches into the field without showing the entire tree.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must avoid too uniform a blue and preserve the organic precision of the branches: their thicknesses, their knots and their bifurcations give all its life to the composition.

  • The exact structure of the trunk and the large branches
  • Brown-green outlines and turquoise accents on the bark
  • The diversity of flowers, from pink buds to white petals
  • Discreet variations of the blue sky around the branches
