Look at the work

A familiar image whose attribution has changed

A blue-purple mountain range dominates yellow and green fields, a small white farm and coiled vegetation. The composition brings together several motifs associated with Van Gogh's stay in Saint-Rémy: the asylum enclosure, the Alpilles, the crops and the small Provençal buildings.

The lines in the foreground rise quickly towards the mountain, while the black contours of the ridge cut out the yellow sky. This spectacular assemblage explains the ancient attribution, but examination of the museum has noted a touch flat and chaotic, unusual colors and forced perspective.

The reproduction remains interesting as testimony to the early diffusion of Van Gogh's style, provided that its current attribution is clearly presented.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The museum considers that the anonymous author probably combined elements from photographs of several authentic works by Van Gogh.

01

A recomposed mountain

The ridge takes on the angular shapes of the Alpilles, but its relationship to the fields and the farm does not correspond convincingly to the real landscape.

02

A forced perspective

Intermediate planes do not create a consistent distance between the foreground, the building and the mountain.

03

An unassigned key

According to the Kroeller-Müller Museum, the brush lacks the structured rhythm observed in Van Gogh's authentic landscapes.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

KM 100.549 is no longer attributed to Vincent van Gogh: the designation F724/JH1745 belongs to the ancient history of the work, not to its current classification.

Attribution

Anonymous author

The Kroeller-Müller Museum today dates the painting to around 1905 -1909 and records it under the name of an unknown artist.

Research

A composition based on photos

The museum considers it likely that the author assembled elements observed in photographic reproductions of different paintings.

Provenance

Purchased in 1912

The painting was acquired in Paris for Helene Kroeller-Müller; doubts about its authenticity grew stronger as research progressed.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must follow the preserved image while selling it honestly as an anonymous landscape based on Van Gogh's universe, not as an original autograph.

  • The long blue-purple ridge
  • The small white farm in the center
  • Fields divided by dark outlines
  • The plant masses rolled up in the foreground
  • The yellow sky covered with pale touches
