Look at the work

Autumn in an avenue of tombs

The Alyscamps formed an ancient necropolis southeast of Arles. Van Gogh went there with Paul Gauguin shortly after his arrival in October 1888. In F569, he placed his easel in the middle of the alley and pushed the perspective between the poplars very far.

The canvas is built like a capital V: trunks and sarcophagi converge towards the bottom, while the carpet of red, orange and yellow leaves advances to the lower edge. The characters, almost black, give scale and contrast daily life with ancient tombs.

Painting does not tell of death; it confronts the permanence of the stone with the passage of walkers and the very brief shine of autumn leaves.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F569 version can be recognized by its frontal axis, its flamboyant poplars and the sarcophagi that line the driveway.

01

A V-shaped perspective

The two rows of trunks come very close towards the center. The tombs arranged in steps reinforce this acceleration of space.

02

An orange carpet

The path is painted with large touches of red, yellow and peach. The material must remain visible to evoke the thickness of the fallen leaves.

03

Three silhouettes

The central characters are reduced to a few dark signs. They should not be detailed further, otherwise the monumental scale of the trees will be broken.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F569/JH1623 distinguish this vertical version from the three other Alyscamps painted by Van Gogh during Gauguin's stay.

Series

Four Alyscamps

Van Gogh painted four canvases on the site in October and November 1888; Both F568 and F569 adopt a vertical format.

Support

Rude jute

This canvas is associated with jute purchased by Gauguin in Arles, whose texture reinforces the rough character of the paint.

Conservation

Private collection

The work was sold at Christie's in 2003 and again in 2015; it remains reported in private collections.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity requires a firm perspective but free material: the design of the trunks guides the eye, while the leaves remain thick and irregular.

  • The very marked convergence of the rows of poplars
  • The vertical rhythm of the yellow and blue trunks
  • Lilac gray sarcophagi on both sides
  • The carpet of red, orange and yellow leaves
  • The small ladder of the three walkers

In your interior

Flamboyant vertical dominated by orange

The vertical format gives height to a narrow wall or a space between two pieces of furniture. Yellows and oranges look spectacular against a gray blue, dark green or warm white background.
