The Alyscamps, F568Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Look at the work

Autumn in the Roman necropolis of Arles

The light path descends diagonally from the lower left edge. Very tall trees border it, their dark blue trunks and orange crowns cutting out large swaths of turquoise green sky.

The sarcophagi appear as low, white and bluish shapes among the grasses. In the background, a couple and some architecture reduced to signs give the ancient site a contemporary presence.

The Basil & Foundation; Elise Goulandris dates this 92 × 73 cm oil on canvas from October - November 1888. Listed F568/JH1622, it is kept in her museum in Athens.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This vertical version belongs to the four paintings that Van Gogh created at the Alyscamps during the first weeks of his joint work with Paul Gauguin.

01

A deliberately abrupt perspective

The path slides quickly to the bottom, while the trees are cut by the top edge. The viewer feels like they are placed in the middle of the site.

02

Colors displace melancholy

Yellows and oranges dominate the dead leaves, but the turquoise of the sky, the blues of the stones and the dark greens prevent the scene from becoming monochrome.

03

Antique meets industry

The sarcophagi recall the Roman necropolis; in the distance, the two chimneys marked by the museum nevertheless inscribe the view in modern Arles in 1888.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Foundation's notice specifies the context, support, provenance and elements of the place represented in this first joint campaign by Van Gogh and Gauguin.

Site

A necropolis from Roman times

The Alyscamps, whose Provençal name refers to the Champs Élysées, still preserved an avenue of poplars and several sarcophagi near Saint-Honorat.

Context

The first motif shared with Gauguin

Shortly after Gauguin's arrival in Arles, the two artists worked side by side on this place while developing very different compositions.

Support

A fine canvas with a marked weft

According to the Foundation, this version was probably the first painted on the site; the thin, strongly woven support accompanies the speed of the touches.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must keep the diagonal depth, the tension of the large trunks, the carpet of orange leaves and the small light blue shapes of the sarcophagi.

  • The clear path in a strong diagonal
  • Dark blue poplars
  • The carpet of orange-yellow leaves
  • The white and blue sarcophagi
  • The tiny couple in the background
