À propos de l’œuvre

Amsterdam, Le Pont, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Peperbrug and Montelbaanstoren in Amsterdam · Shelburne Museum

The Bridge, Amsterdam W306hand painted reproduction

The Peperbrug rises above the Rapenburgwal while passers-by cross its fixed part. Behind the wooden mechanism, the Montelbaanstoren tower emerges into a milky sky. Monet balances the dark architecture of the bridge, the tiny figures and blue-green reflections to transform a specific urban site into a study of humid light.

Look at the work

The diagonal of the drawbridge enlivens an urban view organized around the water

The dark deck crosses almost the entire width of the canvas. In the center, the high structure of the drawbridge carries two long beams inclined to the right; their ropes descend in front of the sky. Passers-by, umbrellas and weathervanes introduce a series of fine and lively accents.

On the left, the facades follow the curve of the canal and lead towards the tower. Under the bridge, the black piers extend with large vertical reflections, while the sky and clouds break into small light touches on the surface of the water.

The monument and the mechanism of the bridge remain recognizable, but their reflections tip the lower half of the painting towards an almost abstract freedom.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A precisely identifiable site

The painting shows the Peperbrug on the Rapenburgwal with the Montelbaanstoren in the background. The tower, slightly offset behind the beams, gives vertical depth to a composition dominated by the horizontal of the bridge.

02

The movement suggested by a fixed architecture

The two oblique arms of the drawbridge appear ready to tip over. Their inclination, the ropes and the line of passers-by introduce an action into what could only be a topographical view.

03

A work linked to the history of American collecting

Louisine Havemeyer purchased the painting on the advice of Mary Cassatt. The Shelburne Museum presents it as the first impressionist painting acquired by this collector and as one of the first to reach the United States.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The visual comes from the reproduction published by the Shelburne Museum for The Bridge, Amsterdam, inventory 1972-69.5 and Wildenstein number 306. The image of 978 × 805 px has been preserved at its native definition and encoded as a real WebP.

Composition01

Beams are not uniform brown

Ochres, gray greens, blacks and cream reflections describe the wood under diffused light. These variations give volume without hardening the mechanism.

Color02

Tower remains partially veiled by atmosphere

Its details blend into light blues and mauves. Too clear a definition would bring it closer to the foreground and reduce the depth.

Matter03

Vertical reflections are continually interrupted

The bridge piers extend into the water, then deform into dark, bright zigzags. This fragmentation must be preserved to restore the movement of the canal.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas measures 53.3 × 63.5 cm. Preserved at the Shelburne Museum under inventory 1972-69.5, it is listed as Wildenstein 306.

Dating01

A work located between the stay of 1871 and the return of 1874

The Shelburne Museum holds 1870 -1871, while the Wildenstein catalog ranks the painting among the views of Amsterdam from 1874. The composition in all cases belongs to Monet's Dutch research on canals and atmosphere.

Architecture02

The Peperbrug and the Montelbaanstoren

The drawbridge crossed the Rapenburgwal near the old port. The Montelbaanstoren, a 16th century watchtower transformed in the following century, constitutes the main landmark in the background.

Provenance03

By Louisine Havemeyer at the Shelburne Museum

Mary Cassatt recommended the purchase to Louisine Havemeyer in 1877. The work then joined the Shelburne Museum thanks to the Electra Havemeyer Webb collection, where it bears the 1972-69.5 inventory.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the diagonal and spacing of the two beams.
  • Maintain the position of the tower behind the mechanism.
  • Maintain silhouettes and umbrellas on a very small scale.
  • Fragment reflections without losing bridge piers.
