In a meadow lined with trees, several small pink and ocher millstones emerge from a ground covered with greens, blues and yellows. The dark row of poplars closes the bottom on the left, while a high mass of trees lets light filter to the right. Signed "Claude Monet 85", this oil on canvas measuring 74 × 93.5 cm is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under number 42.541. It corresponds to Wildenstein 995.

Look at the work

Modest millstones appear between two edges, long before Monet makes them the monumental subject of a series

The meadow opens from the lower edge in horizontal and oblique touches. A large millstone partially enters from the left, then three smaller shapes move away towards the edge. Their reduction gives depth, but their pink and orange hue keeps them visible among the cooled greens.

The bottom is not a uniform wall. On the left, the trees are almost black and tight; in the center, their trunks let purple pass through; on the right, yellow light passes through the branches and falls on the grass. The sky, reduced to a thin area at the top, focuses attention on the colorful variations of the terrain.

The MFA notes that the canvas is dominated by blues, greens and purples, but that thin yellow streaks reveal the sun filtering through the trees on the right.

The millstones punctuate the depth

They do not yet form a frontal series as in the 1890s. Their spaced arrangement connects the large foreground to the edge of the woods and gives a concrete scale to the meadow.

The edge changes density

The trunks on the left blend into a dark band; those on the right stand out in the light. This progression avoids a flat fence and creates a light passage out of field.

The ground receives all the colors of the landscape

Emerald green, turquoise, purple, pink and yellow intersect in the grass. The touches do not describe each strand: they reflect the gray areas, the reflections of the sky and the clearings.

From Monet to Durand-Ruel from December 1885

The merchant acquired the painting directly from the artist. Lilla Cabot Perry then purchased it for her brother Arthur Tracy Cabot, to whom it belonged no later than 1899.

Legacy of Doctor Arthur Tracy Cabot in 1942

The work entered the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston that year and received the number 42.541. It remains associated with the artistic history of the Cabot Perry family.
