Look at the work

The dark pine gives a monumental scale to the light of the Mediterranean

The trunk enters from the lower edge, bends to the left then spreads its branches above the bay. Behind this very close foreground, the sea forms a large horizontal opening, while the Estérel gently closes the distance.

Deep greens, blues and purples structure the tree; oranges, pinks and yellows appear in the ground and branches. The sea and sky are lighter, constructed by touches of blue, mauve and cream that make the southern light vibrate.

The motif is not a simple view of Antibes: Monet contrasts the force of a wind-bent tree with the almost immaterial expanse of the gulf, making the atmosphere visible.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A tree placed like a frame

The pine divides the canvas without exactly occupying the center. Its branches guide the gaze towards the sea and prevent the panorama from becoming a succession of horizontal bands.

02

A depth based on saturation

The darkest and most intense colors remain in the foreground. The bay and mountains recede because their blues are lighter, colder and less contrasting.

03

Mediterranean light translated without uniform white

Monet disperses pink, blue, yellow and purple even in bright areas. Clarity comes from the proximity of colors and not from a smoothed surface.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1192 is used throughout the file. The real WebP measures 2,200 × 1,558 px and retains its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Respect the twist of the pine

The trunk and branches have precise inflections. Straightening or symmetrizing them would remove the tension produced by the sea wind.

Color02

Store the oranges in the foreground

These warm accents respond to greens and blues. They give the rocky ground its warmth without turning the whole scene into a sunset.

Matter03

Keep the Estérel light but readable

Mountains must remain distinct from the sea while maintaining a small difference in value. A hard contour would reduce atmospheric depth.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Courtauld Gallery documents Antibes, oil on canvas from 1888, 65.5 × 92.4 cm, inventory P.1948.SC.276 and Wildenstein 1192.

Location01

From Cap d'Antibes towards the Gulf of Juan and the Estérel

The Courtauld notice places the view towards the southwest. The pine pushed by the wind belongs to the cape, while the Estérel range appears beyond the water.

Campaign02

A new palette for the South in 1888

Monet stayed for several months in the south of France and sought to bring a light very different from that of Normandy. He then evokes the need for a palette of diamonds and precious stones.

Collection03

Legacy Samuel Courtauld in 1948

The work enters the collection through the bequest of Samuel Courtauld. It is today exhibited in London under number P.1948.SC.276.
