Look at the work

Antibes becomes a band of light between the sea and the mountains

The city occupies the middle of the composition. Its ramparts, roofs and two towers can be read in a succession of yellows, ochres and roses, without rigid architectural outline. In the foreground, the sea opens a large blue-green surface which leads directly towards the city.

The Alps close the horizon with pale peaks, almost confused with the sky. The contrast between their bluish freshness and the warmth of the walls of Antibes gives the city its brilliance. The horizontal touches of the water stabilize the whole and prolong the afternoon light.

Monet contrasts the golden city with the blue and pink mountains: the precision of the place remains, but the architecture is absorbed by the variations of light which constitute the real subject.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An identifiable city without descriptive drawing

The twin towers and the line of the ramparts are enough to recognize Antibes. Monet builds them with close-up colored touches, letting the light dissolve the secondary details.

02

A depth organized by the temperature of the colors

The warm ochres of the city advance, while the cold blues and roses of the Alps retreat. The distance is thus created by chromatic relationships as much as by perspective.

03

A sea that reflects without becoming a mirror

Blues, greens and whites remain fragmented. Water does not mechanically reproduce the city: it transmits the brilliance of the sky and the Mediterranean atmosphere through a rhythm of short touches.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1158 is used throughout the file. The real WebP measures 1,600 × 1,281 px, the best reliable public definition identified for this version from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, preserved without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the two towers in the urban silhouette

They remain small but constitute the essential reference point for identifying Antibes. Their height must remain proportionate to the extent of the ramparts.

Color02

Preserve roses in the mountains

The Alps aren't just blue or gray. Pinkish shades connect the distance to the warm city walls and make afternoon light noticeable.

Matter03

Keep the sea tinged with blue and green

A uniform blue would erase the vibration of the surface. The juxtaposition of light and deep tones creates the sensation of water crossed by the sun.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston preserves Antibes, Afternoon Effect, oil on canvas from 1888, 66 × 82.5 cm, inventory 27.1324 and Wildenstein 1158.

Campaign01

A working stay in Antibes in 1888

Monet paints the city, the bay, the pines and the Alps under changing lighting. Several close compositions are distinguished by their point of view and their luminous moment.

Light02

A golden city in front of pink and blue mountains

In a letter addressed to Alice, Monet describes precisely the contrast that interests him in Antibes: a city with golden tones standing out against cold and colorful mountains.

Collection03

Gift of Samuel Dacre Bush in 1927

The painting enters the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under number 27.1324. The museum documents it under the title Antibes, Afternoon Effect.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This bright Mediterranean view is suitable for a living room, dining room or office. A very pale gray blue, sand or pink wall and a sober setting extend its balance between warmth and freshness.
