Look at the work

The pink house catches the eye in the middle of an almost bright spring light

The building is placed slightly to the left of the center, partially hidden by thin trunks which cross the entire height. The meadow rises in the foreground; behind the roof, a strip of blue sea then a pale coast open the landscape.

Monet combines acid green, yellow, pink, orange, blue and lavender in thick touches. The small yellow and green marks on the branches indicate the first leaves, without closing the view of the house and the horizon.

Architecture does not block nature: the trunks pass in front of it, the colors of the roof respond to the ground and the sea extends the space behind its walls.

Their thin trunks cut out the house but let the eye circulate. A few leaves are enough to suggest the beginning of spring without creating an opaque mass.

A view of the Antibes countryside

Monet stayed four months in the region in 1888 and painted around thirty-five canvases. The gardener's house allows him to unite a simple architectural motif, nearby vegetation, the sea and the Alps.

Trees are not added ornaments: their overlap creates depth. Removing or moving them would completely change the point of view.

Preserve the opposition of warm roof and cold sea

Pink and orange concentrate the light in the center, while the blues in the background open the distance. This contrast is the colorful heart of the work.

Keep the touch thick and separate

Small marks remain visible in the meadow, foliage and sky. Melting too smooth would cause the intensity of the Mediterranean sun to lose.
