Apple tree in bloom by the water W585hand painted reproduction

An apple tree covered in white, pink flowers leans over a damp bank. The curved trunk crosses the composition from below, then divides into a foliage so dense that the sky only appears in small gaps. Painted in 1880 during the years of Vétheuil, this oil on canvas kept in a private collection corresponds to Wildenstein 585.

Look at the work

An almost life-size tree transforms the bank into a wall of spring light

The vertical framing cuts the crown and brings the viewer very close. The trunk starts from the lower half, tilts to the left then brings the eye back to the center through its branches; the dark bank and narrow water give just enough depth to locate the tree.

Monet does not separate each flower. It superimposes touches of white, pink, soft green, dark green and gray blue; light accents advance towards the eye while deep greens deepen the foliage around the trunk.

The subject is not an orchard seen from afar: it is the close encounter with a single apple tree, whose flowers, leaves and reflections fill almost the entire canvas.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A curved trunk that holds the entire composition

Its dark base rises from the bank then splits under flowering. This organic line prevents the abundance of small touches from becoming a uniform surface.

02

A depth constructed by densities

The light branches in the foreground stand out against more compact green areas. A few bluish intervals and the water's edge are enough to suggest what is behind the tree.

03

Flowers rendered in bursts

Whites never form regular pellets. They vary from cream to cold pink, sometimes mixed with green, in order to maintain the impression of flowering captured in a moving light.

Read this specific version

The only photograph of the framed work is preserved in its native definition of 1951 × 2314 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain exact trunk tilt

It gives its energy to the whole and balances the weight of the flower crown; a straightened tree would profoundly modify this W585 version.

Color02

Preserve dark greens under flowers

They give relief to white touches and prevent flowering from appearing flat or uniformly bright.

Matter03

Keep waterfront discreet

This vertical band of reflections remains secondary, but it explains the title and separates the bank close to the plant bottom.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The catalog raisonné identifies Apple tree in bloom by the water as Wildenstein 585, an oil on canvas from 1880 now kept in a private collection.

Period01

The years of Vétheuil, from 1878 to 1881

Monet then worked on the banks of the Seine and observed very closely the gardens, trees, banks and seasonal changes around the village.

Version02

Wildenstein number 585

The vertical format, the strongly curved trunk and the flowering which fills almost the entire frame distinguish this canvas from the other apple trees painted by Monet.

Photograph03

The work seen with its frame

The image selected shows the canvas framed during a presentation at the Musée d'Orsay; the work nevertheless remains listed in private collections.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 585 version
  • The curved trunk in the center
  • Very dense white and pink flowering
  • The thin strip of water under the foliage

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This vertical landscape is suitable for an entrance, a bedroom or a narrow section of wall. A sage green, gray pink or ivory background and a brown or matte gold frame extend its character as a spring garden.
