Apples and grapes W545hand painted reproduction

Look at the work

A still life where fruits, basketry and the folds of the tablecloth oppose their materials under a side light

The basket is slightly off-center to the left and forms a low ellipse. Dark clusters occupy its heart, surrounded by red, orange and yellow apples which move forward or backward depending on their value. In front, a small light cluster and several fruits break the symmetry, as if the composition had just been arranged.

The tablecloth does not serve as a neutral background: its white, gray, lilac and bluish folds cross the table diagonally long. On the right, its edge falls onto a piece of red-brown wooden furniture whose rigid lines contrast with the flexibility of the fabric. The dark background absorbs the upper contours and reinforces the shine of the fruits.

The bad weather that forces Monet to work indoors does not suspend his research on light: he concentrates it on the shine of the skins, the transparency of the grains and the colored shadows of the laundry.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The basket forms the center of gravity

Its ocher basketry connects the red fruits to the brown furniture. The braiding curves support the mass of the bunches without becoming too precise a decorative design.

02

The grapes are built in small touches

Black grains contain purple, blue and light highlights; white clusters mix yellow, pink and green. Their volume arises from these variations rather than from a regular outline.

03

The tablecloth leads the eye to the pears

Its diagonal folds start from the basket and open to the right. The two yellow fruits, spaced on this clear field, prevent the composition from weighing entirely on the left side.

Composition01

Maintain the hierarchy between fruits and tablecloth

The whites of the fabric should remain colored and less shiny than the reflections placed on the apples and grains. A uniform pure white would crush the volumes.

Color02

Differentiate each grape family

The dark cluster remains compact and deep; the light grapes in the foreground are more transparent and dispersed. Their treatment must not become identical.

Matter03

Preserve the wide folds of the laundry

The material of the fabric is indicated by large passages, sometimes left open. Too much detail would give a photographic rendering foreign to Monet's touch.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Metropolitan Museum of Art documents Apples and Grapes, oil on canvas from 1879 -1880, 67.6 × 89.5 cm, inventory 57.183 and Wildenstein catalog 545.

Context01

An indoor session imposed by bad weather

The Met states that Monet painted three table still lifes with baskets of apples and grapes during a rainy period of 1879 -1880, when the outdoors was momentarily impassable.

Testimony02

A "fruit painting" reported in November 1879

Marthe Hoschedé, Monet's future daughter-in-law, noted that he was actively working on his still lifes. This testimony places achievement at the heart of Vétheuil’s family life.

Collection03

Gift of Henry R. Luce in 1957

The painting is registered under number 57.183 in the European Paintings Department. It is on display at Met Fifth Avenue in gallery 818.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This still life is suitable for a dining room, an elegant kitchen or a living room with natural materials. A cream, olive green or pinkish brown wall and a patinated gold or walnut frame reinforce the reds of the apples and the shadows of the grapes.
