Artwork description
Claude Monet · Vétheuil in spring · Budapest
Plum trees covered with white flowers occupy the entire foreground, in front of the houses of Vétheuil and the cultivated hill. Monet makes this spring landscape vibrate with a multitude of green, cream, blue and pink touches.

Look at the work
Thin trunks and flower-laden branches form a tight network in the lower half. The eye does not encounter a regular row: each tree has its own inclination, density and temperature. Between the branches, grass appears in bursts of emerald green, blue and yellow.
The roofs and facades of the village make up a clear intermediate strip. Above, the hill is divided into oblique patches of ocher, pink, green and blue, then joins a very active sky. This passage from the nearby orchard to the distant hillside gives depth without resorting to strong contours.
Spring is not described by uniform white, but by the circulation of countless colorful touches between flowers, grass, houses and sky.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Flowers and branches cover the surface without a single focal point. The gaze must be able to circulate between the trees while perceiving their successive planes.
Houses and roofs remain visible between the orchard and the hill. Their more geometric shapes offer a break in the middle of the plant touch.
The plots are indicated by oblique bands of contrasting colors. They give the direction of the relief and take up the tones of the orchard on a larger scale.
Reference image
The high definition reference allows you to read the superpositions of branches, the colorful variations of the flowers and the plots of the hill, three levels essential to the depth of this W520 version.
Irregular trunks and crossed branches create a natural rhythm throughout the width of the orchard.
Cream, pink, pale blue and light green give the bouquets their volume and vibration.
Short and nervous in the grass, punctual in the flowers, wider on the hill and diffuse in the sky.
Documented benchmarks
The notice from the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts documents the creation, dimensions, inventory and exhibition history of this painting by Vétheuil.
Monet has lived since the previous summer in this village on the Seine, where orchards, hillsides and atmospheric changes profoundly renew his motifs.
The museum says the work was likely shown during the solo exhibition held in the newspaper gallery, an important moment for the return of critical attention.
Preserved in Budapest, this oil on canvas measures 64.5 × 81 cm and corresponds to Wildenstein number 520.
