Vincent van Gogh · September -October 1887 · Paris
Yellow, red and pink apples spread over an almost entirely blue and green surface. Fruits and background seem to compete in intensity, with no horizon or container to separate them.
Look at the work
The apples form an irregular arc that crosses the entire width. Some are seen from the front, others tilt towards their peduncle; their silhouettes touch each other without forming a mechanical row.
The dark background is never uniform. Multiple blues and greens intersect there, then yellow, orange, red and pink lines run through it like reflections, taking on the warm colors of the fruits.
Pommes is an oil on canvas measuring 45.7 × 60.4 cm painted in Paris in September - October 1887. Referenced F254/JH1342, it is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0131V1962.
Composition, touch and color
The museum presents the canvas as a veritable explosion of colors where foreground and background compete for attention. Van Gogh, however, unifies the whole by using the same colors in reverse order.
Blues and greens form its base, then touches of yellow, orange, red and pink are added above. The surface appears deep while remaining very material.
Van Gogh first lays out the warm tones of the fruits, then punctuates them with green and blue accents. This inversion brings out each apple while connecting it to the bottom.
We no longer know exactly whether the fruits rest on a table, a fabric or a painted surface. The viewer therefore concentrates on the rhythm of the shapes and touches.
Documented benchmarks
References F254/JH1342, dimensions 45.7 × 60.4 cm and inventory s0131V1962 identify this Parisian still life precisely documented by the Van Gogh Museum.
In 1887, the association of Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists pushed Van Gogh to experiment with colorful contrasts and distinct touches.
The same hot and cold range appears everywhere, but in a different order between background and fruit. This process connects the two spaces without confusing them.
Freed from any container, they form their own architecture. Dark intervals and overlays give the group its depth.
Your reproduction
The copy must retain the irregular arch of the apples, their mixtures of red and yellow, the cold accents on the skins and the exceptional richness of the blues and greens of the background.
