Regattas in Argenteuil W233hand painted reproduction

Four sailboats with large white sails cross the Argenteuil basin. Their light shapes stand out in front of the bank and extend into blue-gray water. Monet reduces the race to a few hulls, masts and reflections, but retains all the sensation of air and movement.

Look at the work

White veils become the main rhythm

The boats are spread across the entire width, but the large sail placed near the center dominates. Smaller sails on the left create progression, while hulls and rowers remain indicated by brief dark accents.

On the right, a few houses, trees and walkers mark the bank. The sky and the Seine use nearby blues, separated by the horizon and by reflections. Those of the sails descend in cream and yellow touches, broken by the horizontal movements of the water.

The subject is a race, but Monet above all paints the fleeting encounter between the wind, the sails and their light on the Seine.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A progression of triangles

Each sail has a different size and inclination. Their succession gives lateral movement without aligning the boats.

02

Wider reflections than sails

Clear shapes dissolve in water and become irregular bands. This deformation makes the chop perceptible.

03

A shore reduced to the essentials

Houses, trees and figures locate Argenteuil, but remain secondary to the light of the sails and the extent of the basin.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The reference corresponds to canvas RF 2778, W233, from the Musée d'Orsay. It makes readable the position of the four sailboats, their reflections, the shore and the small accents of color which animate the boats.

Composition01

A very elongated format

The width of the canvas follows the opening of the pool and allows the sailboats to be spaced out like successive stages of a race.

Color02

Warm whites on cold blue

The sails mix ivory, yellow and gray; they gain brightness in contrast with the sky and the blue-gray water.

Matter03

A fragmented touch in the open air

The reflections, the shells and the edge are constructed by short gestures which let the canvas vibrate between the shapes.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay documents this painting under inventory RF 2778 and number 233 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Context01

Canoeing in Argenteuil

The Seine forms a vast expanse of water where racing boats have competed since 1850, attracting competitors and walkers from Paris.

Caillebotte Collection02

Purchase for 200 francs in 1876

Gustave Caillebotte acquired the painting from Monet on February 26, 1876 and kept it until his death in 1894.

National Collection03

Legacy accepted in 1896

The State accepts the Caillebotte legacy intended for the Luxembourg Museum; the work then joins the Louvre then the Musée d'Orsay.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the scale, inclination and spacing of each sail.
  • Keep the shells and figures with short but precise accents.
  • Distort white reflections without transforming them into symmetrical copies.
  • Keep the bank set back by contrasts softer than those of sailboats.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The large ivory sails and blue-gray water give a fresh and very readable light. This regatta is suitable for a living room, office or house near water; an oak, off-white or deep blue frame respects its panoramic format.
