Argenteuil, le pont en réparation, par Claude Monet

Argenteuil, the bridge under repair W194hand painted reproduction

The Seine occupies almost half of the canvas, calm under a pink gray sky. On the left, the Argenteuil road bridge disappears into a wooden scaffolding; vertical steam, taken up in the water, connects the site to the sky.

Look at the work

Construction dissolves in air and water

The bridge enters the composition from the left edge and stops before the center. The beams form a dense construction, but Monet avoids making a technical drawing of them: the nearby elements are firm, those on the opposite bank soften in the mist. The gaze then moves freely towards the town and the trees.

A steamboat passes behind the scaffolding. Its blue-gray plume rises almost vertically, then widens in the sky; its reflection descends into the water with a lower density. This double movement shares the canvas and connects the horizontal areas of the river, the bank and the sky.

The structure of the bridge is imposing, but Monet gives the main role to fleeting phenomena: smoke, mist and reflection.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately off-center bridge

The construction site occupies the left, while the right two thirds remain open on the bank and the sky. This apparent imbalance creates a strong feeling of space.

02

Steam as a flexible vertical

The plume and its reflection form a slightly moving central axis. Their contours must gradually dissolve in the sky and in the Seine.

03

Very restrained reflections

The water is worked by gray, green and pink horizontal passages. It takes the shapes without duplicating them exactly and maintains a calm surface.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The reference corresponds to the 60 × 80.5 cm canvas W194. It clearly shows the deck from the shore, the steamboat and the large water area, and distinguishes it from the W195 wooden deck with a much closer framing.

Composition01

A vast surface of water

The Seine creates a silent foreground which amplifies the reflections and moves the construction site away.

Color02

Pink and green grays

The muted palette constantly varies between sky, smoke, wood and shore, without uniform neutral gray.

Matter03

A partially erased geometry

Nearby beams remain legible, then their accuracy decreases towards the opposite bank and steam.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The National Gallery of Art publication and Fitzwilliam documentation place this work precisely in Monet's early days in Argenteuil.

History01

Traces of the war of 1870

The road and rail bridges of Argenteuil had been destroyed. In the spring of 1872, Monet painted the reconstruction work already well advanced.

Composition02

A first study of the road bridge

This distant view gives as much importance to the Seine and the atmosphere as to the construction site; Monet chose a very different framing for The Wooden Bridge W195.

Collection03

Loan to the Fitzwilliam Museum

The work belongs to a private collection. The oil on canvas measures 60 × 80.5 cm and bears the number Wildenstein 194.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain framing asymmetry and deep right-hand water breathing.
  • Gradually dissolve smoke in the sky without losing its vertical axis.
  • Make reflections softer, colder and less defined than their patterns.
  • Paint the scaffolding precisely in the foreground then integrate it into the mist of the shore.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This view of pinkish grays, muted greens and wood browns creates a calm and architectural atmosphere in a living room, an office or a wide corridor. A discreet smoky gray, walnut or bronze frame extends its range without weighing down the Seine.
