The wind crosses every part of the landscape

The trees on the left form a large vertical, but their tops and branches lean to the right. The hulls moored at the foot of the bank remain dark and stable. This contrast between anchoring and movement opens the composition towards the river.

In the center, a small boat advances in front of the sailboats. The white of the sails stands out from the gray of the clouds, then is faintly reflected in the silvery green water. On the distant shore, houses, trees and hills are brought back to a low band which leaves a dominant place for the sky.

The subject is not only Argenteuil: it is the action of the same wind on the poplars, the clouds, the sails and the moving surface of the Seine.

The dark boat on the left belongs to the foreground, the canoe loaded with figures crosses the median plane and the sailboats move away towards the shore. This distribution makes the water breathe between the groups.

The gray of time remains colorful

The sky mixes off-white, gray-green, blue and mauve; the water takes on these tones with warmer earths. The sails appear luminous because they are surrounded by shades, not because they are painted a uniform white.
