À propos de l’œuvre

L'Arlésienne, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · February 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

The Arlesienne, version from the Bakwin collectionReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Marie Ginoux appears in an exceptionally light variant: pale pink garment turned almost white, sea green breastplate, green papers and ivory background punctuated with small flowers. This painting is the late version formerly preserved by the Bakwin family.

Look at the work

The brightest of the late Arlesians

The bust occupies the center of a vertical format. The hand supports the cheek, but the gaze moves sideways with a very attentive presence. The light garment widens to the edges and surrounds the large pale green bib.

Two green and brown books rest on the table. Behind the figure, the ivory background bears small floral motifs drawn in fine lines. This decoration and the very light jacket immediately differentiate F543 from the versions of Rome, Otterlo and Sao Paulo.

The dark contours of the face and hair are enough to keep the figure in the foreground despite a palette almost entirely bathed in light.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F543/JH1895 version can be recognized by the light clothing, the ivory background with small patterns, the green bib and the two books placed in front of Madame Ginoux.

01

A variation by light

Van Gogh retains the same general design as in the other Arlesiennes of 1890, but reverses their balance by giving a dominant place to whites, pale yellows and greens.

02

Drawing under color

Hair, eyebrows, eyes, fingers and edges of books are strongly surrounded. These black lines organize light shades without weighing them down.

03

An ornamental background

Small flowers do not describe a specific room. They form a calm decorative rhythm that responds to the contours of the face and hand.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Christie's documented this 65 × 54 cm oil on canvas when it was sold in 2006. It bears the references F543 and JH1895 and was long known as the Bakwin version.

Provenance

From Theo to Johanna

The published provenance begins with Theo van Gogh, then Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. The painting then passed through Bernheim-Jeune and several European collections.

Collection

The Bakwin family from 1929

Harry Bakwin acquired the work in September 1929. It remained with his family until its sale at Christie's in 2006.

Series

Based on Gauguin's drawing

Like the other late versions, the composition takes up the charcoal portrait drawn by Gauguin in Arles in November 1888.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the subtle differences between the ivory of the background, the very pale pink of the garment and the green of the breastplate, without losing the precision of the contours.

  • The very light garment bordered by blue-gray lines
  • The ivory background decorated with small floral motifs
  • The pale green breastplate that lights up the face
  • The two green and brown books in the foreground
