À propos de l’œuvre
L'Arlésienne, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · February 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
The Arlesian, Rome versionReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Marie Ginoux leans on her hand in front of a luminous yellow background. Her black dress, the very light green bib and the two clearly colored books make up the version kept at the Galleria Nazionale in Rome.
Look at the work
Madame Ginoux on an almost sunny yellow background
The body is turned slightly while the face looks to the left. The hand placed on the cheek extends the line of the white and green breastplate. The blue-black garment forms a large mass, interrupted only by a few turquoise contours.
The dark green table carries two open or layered books, one sea green, the other red brown. The orange back of the chair appears behind the model. The yellow background, painted in small, tight touches, makes this version immediately distinct from those of Otterlo and Sao Paulo.
The melancholy pose remains stable, but the yellow of the background and the colored contours give the portrait astonishing clarity.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Work 5164 can be recognized by its yellow background, the orange backrest, the dark color and the two colorful books whose titles are still readable.
A pose from Gauguin
Van Gogh takes up the charcoal drawing made by Gauguin in Arles in November 1888. He retains the general attitude while completely reconstructing the colored harmony.
Two meaningful books
Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin and Charles Dickens' Christmas Tales reflect the values of compassion that Van Gogh associated with Madame Ginoux.
Yellow versus black
The bright background pushes the tall dark figure to the foreground. Between the two, the pale green bib transitions and directs attention to the face.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Galleria Nazionale keeps this L'Arlésienne under inventory number 5164. Painted in Saint-Rémy in February 1890, it measures 60 × 50 cm and corresponds to catalogs F540 and JH1892.
Marie Ginoux
The owner of Café de la Gare welcomed Van Gogh upon his arrival in Arles and helped him during his crises at the end of 1888.
A version intended for Ginoux
The late series is designed for several recipients linked to the artist. The painting of Rome is generally attached to the copy sent to the Ginoux.
Stolen then found in 1998
The painting was stolen from the Galleria Nazionale in May 1998 along with two other works. It was recovered and returned to the museum in July of the same year.
