À propos de l’œuvre

Bras de la Seine à Giverny, brumes matinales, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1897 · North Carolina Museum of Art G.75.24.1 · W1474

The Seine at Giverny, mists, Raleigh W1474hand painted reproduction

The left bank advances in green and blue foliage, while the other bank dissolves in pink and mauve vapor. The sky and the river share almost the same light. In the center, a very pale band descends into the water; a few horizontal lines and a purple reflection are nevertheless enough to restore the surface. Among the Mornings on the Seine, this version is one of the most delicate and closest to erasure.

Look at the work

The trees barely emerge from a pink mist where the sky, the shore and their reflection lose their borders

The vegetation on the left gives the foreground. Monet superimposes olive green, cold blue, gray and small touches of cream. The edge of the branches unravels as they approach the center. On the right, the distant trees are almost transparent: their silhouette exists only through a slight difference between the mauve of the foliage and the light pink of the atmosphere.

The central light does not form a regular column. It widens above the horizon, narrows in the middle of the river then fragments in the foreground. Blue, gray and purple marks indicate the current. The signature "Claude Monet 97", lower left, provides one of the rare linear accents in this composition dominated by melted passages.

Here, the depth does not come from the design of the banks but from the speed at which their colors disappear in the mist.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A nearby bank built without outline

The left foliage brings together several greens and blues before dissolving. Its edge must remain irregular to maintain the impression of vegetation crossed by humid air.

02

A distant, almost transparent shore

The trees on the right are not removed: they remain perceptible by small differences of mauve, gray and pink. These tiny differences give the distance.

03

Water more readable in the foreground

The horizontal keys become a little more present towards the bottom. They allow the viewer to identify the river without interrupting the atmospheric unity.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 789 × 768 px. It corresponds to version G.75.24.1 of Raleigh and has been converted into a real WebP without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

An almost square balance

The left mass, the central gap and the right group of trees occupy unequal but complementary areas. This scale catches the eye without resorting to a geometric perspective.

Color02

A very nuanced pastel range

Powder pink, mauve, pearl blue, sage green and cream mix without neutralizing each other. Reproduction must preserve the freshness of each temperature.

Matter03

A light, non-smooth material

Even in foggy areas, the weave of the fingerboard remains visible. Short, superimposed gestures give the veil its vibration and prevent the surface from becoming flat.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information concerns Raleigh's painting, inventory G.75.24.1 and Wildenstein 1474.

Identification01

North Carolina Museum of Art G.75.24.1, W1474

This oil on canvas from 1897 measures 88.9 × 91.4 cm. The museum presents it under the title The Seine at Giverny, Morning Mists and preserves it under the number G.75.24.1.

A campaign started before dawn02

Monet got up around 3:30 a.m

The museum notice recalls that Monet worked very early to capture the light passing through the fog. A witness reports that he alternated between fourteen canvases in his boat as the sun rose.

Documented route03

From Durand-Ruel to the Raleigh collection

The published provenance passed from Monet to Durand-Ruel in 1900, then to Bertha Honoré Palmer in 1902. After several family transmissions, the work was acquired by the North Carolina Museum of Art in 1975.
