Vincent van Gogh · Spring 1887 · Paris

Self-portrait, F345Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh depicts himself halfway through the bust, his face turned towards the viewer and his green gaze deeply fixed. Hundreds of little blue, green, red and orange touches vibrate the bottom, the jacket, the hair and the beard.

Look at the work

A face built in a swarm of complementary touches

The light head occupies the center of the cardboard, framed by a very dense blue-green background. The shoulders form an oblique base where the red-brown jacket is fragmented into a mosaic of colors.

The forehead and cheeks retain more light, but no passage is perfectly smooth. Short strokes follow the hair, eyebrows, nose and beard, then disperse freely around the figure.

Self-portrait F345/JH1249 is an oil on artist's cardboard mounted on a 41 × 32.5 cm panel painted in Paris in 1887. The Art Institute of Chicago preserves it under number 1954.326.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The museum connects the tight touch of this self-portrait to the discovery of Georges Seurat's pointillism. Van Gogh retains the separation of colors, but uses it with a very personal intensity.

01

Green eyes dominate the mosaic

Surrounded by reds and pinks, they are the most stable point on a surface where almost every other color seems to move.

02

The beard contrasts orange and blue

The red features of the chin and cheeks advance on the cold accents of the background and collar, reinforcing the relief of the face without black shadow.

03

The jacket extends the background method

Blue green, red, orange and purple juxtapose even in the garment; the limit between the silhouette and its environment remains vibrant.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The current Art Institute notice gives 1887, 41 × 32.5 cm, the artist's cardboard support mounted on panel and the number 1954.326.

Paris

At least twenty-four self-portraits

The museum reminds us that Van Gogh painted himself very often during his two years in Paris, due to not being able to regularly pay for models.

Pointillism

A personal response to Seurat

The discovery of La Grande Jatte encourages this divided touch; Van Gogh, however, replaces the scientific method with very mobile and emotional traits.

Collection

The Joseph Winterbotham Fund

Entering the Art Institute in 1954, the painting is numbered 1954.326 and belongs to the collection of thirty-five works in the Winterbotham Collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the green look, the light oval of the forehead, the orange beard, the separate touches of the background, the mosaic of the jacket and the balance between reds, greens and blues.

  • The two green eyes fixed on the viewer
  • Red lines around the eyelids
  • The orange beard built touch by touch
  • The blue-green background punctuated with red
  • The mosaic jacket in complementary colors
