The Seine describes a gentle curve between a grassy bank on the left and a row of trees ablaze with yellow, orange, pink and green. Their colors extend into the water in fragmented touches, while the mauve blue hillsides fade into the distance. Signed and dated "Claude Monet 84", this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm is kept in the Museum Barberini under the number MB-Mon-17. It corresponds to Wildenstein 916.

Look at the work

The autumn foliage and its reflection form a single movable mosaic around the calm curve of the Seine

The left bank enters from the lower corner into large green areas crossed by blue shadows. Its sinuous outline accompanies the river to the distant hillside. On the right, the trees take up more space and their branches almost blend into the sky, producing a luminous mass rather than a succession of isolated trunks.

The yellow, pink and green reflections descend into the water then break into horizontal gestures. In the center, a gray and blue area remains more open and gives the river its depth. The distant hill, painted very soft purple, contrasts its stability with the close vibration of the leaves.

The Museum Barberini describes the leaves as a patchwork of multicolored touches whose pure contrasts create a sparkle relayed by the movement of the reflections.

Probably purchased in Monet by Durand-Ruel in November 1884

The painting then passed through the galleries of Paris and New York, then several private collections. It entered the Hasso Plattner collection after its 2013 sale.
