The central pond orders the daily life of the Norman court

The brown-roofed buildings extend to the left, with dark openings and walls warmed by the sun. The pond begins in the middle of the painting and leads to a small construction placed at the bottom. Its light surface reflects the sky and separates the architectures of the animals from the foreground.

A brown cow stands out in the grass on the left, facing the water. On the right, the poultry form a light group near two figures dressed in blue and white. Behind them, the trees rise into a green and red mass which closes the composition without hiding the sky.

Monet distributes buildings, water, animals and figures around the same light: the farm becomes a constructed landscape rather than a simple rural inventory.

The walls, straw, earth and certain foliage receive neighboring ochres. Blues in the water, the sky and clothing provide the necessary contrast without breaking the unity of the courtyard.
