Vincent van Gogh · May 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

The House of Father ÉloiReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A yellow house with a red roof overlooks an enclosed garden where plants seem to grow in all directions. Van Gogh transforms this village motif into a network of curved lines, verticals and colorful touches.

Look at the work

A bright house behind a teeming garden

The main facade occupies the top of the center, with two red chimneys and a roof streaked with brown. On the left, lower outbuildings extend the construction; their pale walls and dark openings give several levels to the whole.

A stake fence runs through the garden in the foreground. Green masses, gnarled trunks and coiled branches cover almost the entire lower part. Above, the blue of the sky is laid in wide horizontal passages, cut by the silhouette of the chimneys.

The stability of the house is enveloped by mobile vegetation, as if the garden is gradually gaining on architecture.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F794 work can be recognized by its almost square format, its yellow house with two fireplaces, its red-brown roof and the garden closed by a palisade.

01

A facade held by the contours

Dark lines surround the roof, windows and corners of the building. This graphic framework maintains the readability of the house in the middle of the plant touches.

02

A garden organized in strips

Clear ground, row of plants, fence and facades overlap. Van Gogh produces depth without resorting to regular perspective.

03

Blue versus yellow

The blue-purple sky brings out the yellow walls and red chimneys. These complementary oppositions give brilliance to a scene that is nevertheless everyday.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must maintain the balance between the built volumes and the garden, as well as the dark contours which articulate windows, roof, fence and branches.

  • The yellow facade and its two red fireplaces
  • The oblique streaks of the orange-brown roof
  • The vertical fence in the middle of the garden
  • The greens, blues and yellows placed in visible touches
