Spring in Giverny W1243hand painted reproduction

In Giverny, a clear meadow extends in front of a curtain of trees where the first leaves mix soft green, yellow and pink. A white house barely appears between the trunks, while a vast pale blue sky envelops the landscape. Signed and dated Claude Monet 90, this oil on canvas measuring 64.8 × 81 cm is kept at the Clark Art Institute under number 1955.616 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1243.

Look at the work

A spring without a central motif, built like a surface of color

The meadow forms a wide horizontal band in the lower third. Above, thin trees follow one another almost parallel to the plane of the canvas. The depth exists, but no path or watercourse leads to a vanishing point.

Pink and orange branches mingle with young greens in front of a milky blue sky. The white touches of the ground suggest flowers or bursts of light. The transitions are so close that the landscape seems to vibrate from one edge to the other.

Instead of leading the eye towards a monument or a distant horizon, Monet invites it to travel laterally across the meadow, trees and sky as a single living surface.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately unaccented depth

The meadow strip and tree line encourage horizontal reading. The almost hidden house refuses to become a traditional focal point.

02

The season expressed by emerging colors

Yellow, pink and orange greens settle on the still light branches. Spring appears as a transitional state rather than fully formed foliage.

03

Varied gestures depending on the area

The meadow receives short, tight touches, the trunks vertical marks and the sky more supple sweeps. These rhythms unify the composition.

Composition01

Keep the house barely visible

Its white walls must remain fragmentary behind the trees and not become too clear an architectural center.

Color02

Preserve the clear strip of the meadow

The white and green touches should keep their variety and horizontality, without transforming into a regular pattern.

Matter03

Keep the roses and yolks in the branches

These light colors carry the budding sensation and distinguish W1243 from a summer landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Clark Art Institute documents Spring in Giverny, oil on canvas from 1890, 64.8 × 81 cm, signed Claude Monet 90, inventory 1955.616 and catalog Wildenstein 1243.

Giverny01

The landscape around Monet's house

Established in the village since 1883, Monet explored the meadows, trees and nearby houses in 1890 before developing his major series.

Composition02

An alternative to the traditional perspective

Clark's scientific catalog highlights the transverse movement created by the meadow and tree line, instead of a deep flight toward a central pattern.

Collection03

Purchased in Durand-Ruel by Sterling Clark

Durand-Ruel kept the work from 1890 to 1933. Robert Sterling Clark acquired it in June 1933 before entering the museum in 1955.
