À propos de l’œuvre

Le jardin de Daubigny, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

The Daubigny GardenReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A flowered lawn leads to the house of landscaper Charles-François Daubigny. Beneath the apparent freshness of the garden, an exceptional material detail remains: Van Gogh painted this first study on a striped tea towel.

Look at the work

A patch of greenery opening onto the house

The bouquet of white and pink roses occupies the foreground, slightly off-center. Behind him, the lawn rises towards a line of trees, the house clear and several roofs which gently close the depth.

The verticals of the trunks and the grid on the right respond to the horizontal bands of the support. Blue, red and pink flowers enliven the greens, while the walls and the sky are reduced to very light areas.

This study is not a simple preparation: its improvised support, its almost square format and its colors now transformed make it an autonomous work.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum keeps this first version under inventory s0104V1962. It corresponds to F765/JH2029 and precedes two large panoramic compositions from the same garden.

01

A painting on a tea towel

Short of canvas, Van Gogh used a red and white striped cloth. He covered it with a pink preparation before placing the garden there, but the red pigments turned largely pale.

02

Pink turned gray

The pink background must have contrasted sharply with the greens of the lawn. Where the preparation remains visible between the keys, it now appears gray, which changes the original chord.

03

The first of three versions

Van Gogh begins with this square view then develops the pattern on two canvases in double square format. This sheet corresponds only to the study kept in Amsterdam.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Le Jardin de Daubigny is an oil on cotton canvas measuring 51 × 51.2 cm, painted in Auvers in June 1890. It bears the inventory s0104V1962 and the references F765/JH2029.

Homage

An admired master's garden

Van Gogh had long admired Charles-François Daubigny, a major figure in modern landscape. Upon his arrival in Auvers, he went to the house and garden where the painter had lived.

Support

Stripes still noticeable

The tea towel is not an anecdote external to the image: its strips and the pink preparation participate in the surface, visible in places between the brushstrokes.

Collection

Inventory s0104V1962

The painting remained with Theo, passed to Jo van Gogh-Bonger then to their son Vincent Willem before being transferred to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must respect the almost square format, the low bouquet in the foreground, the nuanced greens and the fine gray areas corresponding to the discolored pink preparation.

  • The mass of white, pink and red roses in the foreground
  • Bands of lawn leading towards the house
  • The vertical trunks and the grid placed on the right
  • The gray passages where the pink preparation has turned pale
