The Daubigny Garden with a catReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Look at the work

A cultivated garden transformed into a vast panorama

The yellow-green lawn extends in the center, lined with flowerbeds, fences and dark trees. A woman stands near a table in the left part. In the foreground, the black cat advances in profile; at the back, the long light house and the bell tower close the space.

Van Gogh had long admired Charles-François Daubigny, a major figure in the modern landscape. He painted his garden several times in Auvers. This version is distinguished by the cat and the inscription "the garden of Daubigny" at the bottom right. It belongs to the group of so-called double square canvases.

The extreme width allows Van Gogh to combine the intimacy of an enclosed garden and the almost musical scale of a landscape.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The version must be recognized by its black cat, its female figure, its inscription and the organization of the garden along the entire length of the double square.

01

The double square format

The canvas is almost twice as wide as it is tall. Van Gogh divides trees, lawn and buildings into long sequences rather than around a single center.

02

A garden in motion

The curved touches of the lawn and flowerbeds circulate through the composition. The vertical trunks and the horizontal house provide an armature for this flow.

03

The little black cat

Its dark silhouette crosses the yellow of the foreground and immediately becomes visible. This detail distinguishes this canvas from another large version where the cat does not appear.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Rudolf Staechelin Collection preserves this version F777/JH2105, long deposited at the Kunstmuseum Basel and presented by the Fondation Beyeler.

Homage

Charles-Francois Daubigny

The garden belonged to the landscaper that Van Gogh admired. After Daubigny's death, his widow Marie-Sophie still lived on the Auvers property.

Format

A double square canvas

Van Gogh adopts this very elongated format for thirteen works by Auvers. Frame analyzes show that these canvases were cut from the same scroll.

Version

F777, the web with the cat

Several views of the garden exist. The presence of the cat, the woman and the inscription at the bottom right allows it to be precisely identified.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the panoramic rhythm, the balance of greens and yellows as well as the small landmarks which identify this version.

  • The black cat in the foreground and the woman near the table
  • Lawn movements and flower beds
  • The long light house, the trees and the bell tower at the back
  • The inscription "the garden of Daubigny" at the bottom right
