An avenue of earth rises between tall sunflowers, red gladioli and two large blue and white pots to Vétheuil's house. No figures cross the staircase: light, flowers and the structure of the garden occupy the entire stage. This oil on canvas measuring 100.3 × 81.3 cm, painted in 1881, is kept at the Norton Simon Museum under number F.1975.09.P and corresponds to Wildenstein 683.

The uncharacteristic Allée de Vétheuil, entirely given over to flowers

The path starts wide at the bottom then narrows in the center in front of the steps. The sunflowers form two asymmetrical masses, denser on the left, while the gladioli and the pots punctuate the foreground.

Blue skies and white clouds dominate pink and gray roofs. In the garden, the yellows of sunflowers alternate with cold greens, reds and purple shadows. The touch becomes tighter in the sky and freer in the vegetation.

The absence of a character does not make the garden still: each flower, each shadow and each change of touch contributes to a summer light which seems to cross the path.

The axis of the path, the steps and the architecture give a clear geometry. Sunflowers overflow this structure with their varied heights and directions.

A more accomplished execution than a simple study

The Norton Simon Museum highlights the tight and confident touch, especially in the sky and clouds. The canvas can be understood as a fully realized reduction of the large pattern.

This absence identifies W683. Adding or suggesting silhouettes would wrongly bring it closer to versions W684 or W685.

Color02

Preserve sunflower asymmetry

The left mass is denser and higher than the right. A symmetrical distribution would cause the naturalness of the garden to be lost.

Matter03

Keep blue and purple shadows on the way

They give the succession of plans and cool the yellows. Simply beige soil would flatten the path and reduce the shine of the flowers.

One of four flower alley studies

Monet takes the path lined with sunflowers and gladioli several times. This figureless version retains a close point of view and a light that makes all the vegetation sparkle.

A completed reduction rather than a preparatory sketch

Long considered a study for the great Washington canvas, according to the museum it presents a touch tight and confident enough to be understood as an autonomous composition.

Provenance03

Acquired directly by Durand-Ruel in 1882

Monet sold the work to Paul Durand-Ruel on February 9, 1882. After several collections and a Christie's sale in 1975, she joined the Norton Simon Foundation.
