Look at the work

The flowers form a screen in front of the pond

The main massif rises from the lower left corner. Its light roses stand out against green and purple foliage; further down, red flowers follow the edge of the canvas. The dark mass of trees, placed in the center and right, serves as their background.

The pond appears in fragments between the bushes and in the lower right corner. On the left, a lawn descends towards a distant blue and pink. The sky remains thin: the space is built by the interlocking of the garden, pond and trees rather than by a wide atmospheric opening.

By bringing the rose bushes closer to the edge of the painting, Monet transforms the garden into an immersive setting and simulates a window open onto the property.

A massif placed exceptionally close

The flowers almost extend beyond the frame and hide part of the landscape. This proximity disrupts the classic composition in successive shots.

A large dark mass to make the roses shine

The trees in the center concentrate the deep greens. The white and red petals thus gain shine without requiring precise contours.

03

A side break rather than an open center

The distant landscape can be seen on the left, while the middle axis remains closed. The gaze goes around the bushes instead of following a direct perspective.

The unique reference corresponds to the MB-Mon-06 inventory of the Museum Barberini, Wildenstein study 417. The file of 2,560 × 1,895 px was preserved without enlargement and converted into WebP.

Composition01

White roses contain many colors

Blues, yellows, pinks and greens shape the petals. A uniform white would remove their volume and their relationship to light.

Color02

The pond should not become too visible

The body of water remains partially hidden by the foliage. Its blue is mainly used to create a cool depth between plant masses.

Matter03

The large central tree is almost black

This very dark value belongs to the balance of the work. It isolates the flowers from the foreground and stabilizes the very colorful palette.

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1876, this oil on canvas measuring 61 × 82 cm is kept at the Museum Barberini under the inventory MB-Mon-06 and classified Wildenstein 417.

Order01

Ernest and Alice Hoschedé Park

The Hoschedé invited Monet to the Château de Rottembourg in Montgeron and commissioned four large views from him intended to decorate their residence: Les Dindons, Coin de jardin, L'Étang and La Chasse.

Study02

The only documented preparatory work for W418

The Museum Barberini identifies W417 as the only known study of the large garden corner in Montgeron. The final canvas, today at the Hermitage, measures 172 × 193 cm, more than double that of this first version.

Exposure03

Presented in 1877 under the title Les Dahlias

The painting appears in the third impressionist exhibition under number 93. Ernest Hoschedé bought it from Monet in December 1876 before his collection was dispersed in 1878.
