The Seine occupies almost the entire composition, animated by blue, green and cream reflections. On the bank of Petit-Gennevilliers, a strip of reeds precedes a few houses with red roofs, while light sailboats slide to the left. Monet unites sky, water and vegetation with a free touch which makes the light of 1874 more present than the topographical detail.
Look at the work
The right bank forms a long green diagonal. The reeds on the edge are indicated by vertical touches, then denser vegetation rises towards the trees and houses. Two orange roofs and a few light gables are enough to make the hamlet exist without interrupting the continuity of the landscape.
On the left, several white sails spread out towards the horizon. The water regains its brightness and that of the sky in small horizontal marks blue gray, pale yellow and green. The dark reflections of the bank never constitute a closed mass: they are crossed by light up to the foreground.
Monet contrasts the plant density of Petit-Gennevilliers with the large mobile surface of the Seine, then brings the two together with the same colorful touches.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The shoreline separates the water from the landscape halfway up, but its inclination and the sailboats placed on the left break any excessive stability. The sky and the Seine remain the two large breathing zones of the image.
Red roofs and cream walls appear above the reeds without becoming the main subject. Their warm colors counterbalance blues and greens, then repeat very discreetly in the water.
Clouds are laid in rounded marks, reeds in verticals, and water in horizontal segments. The coherence of the canvas comes less from a single touch than from the continuous passage of the same colors from one material to another.

The visual corresponds to the Banks of the Seine at Petit-Gennevilliers, oil on canvas from 1874 listed Wildenstein 333. The reference of 871 × 640 px is kept without oversampling in a real WebP file.
Their whites contain blue, green and yellow depending on the surrounding sky and water. Uniform opaque white would artificially move boats forward and reduce depth.
Light reeds, blue-green shrubs and darker trees overlap. These plans must remain distinct without drawing a clear boundary around each plant.
Deep reflections are cut by touches of cream and pale blue. Preserving these intervals prevents nearby water from becoming a dark band and maintains the overall shine of the scene.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 54.2 × 73 cm. It belongs to a private collection and bears the number Wildenstein 333.
Petit-Gennevilliers is located on the opposite bank to Argenteuil, where Monet has lived since 1871. This sector allows him to observe still vegetal banks, houses, sailboats and the modern activity of the basin.
Monet painted this canvas in 1874, in the immediate wake of the impressionist group's first exhibition organized in the spring. The light surface, visible touches and contemporary pattern bear witness to this outdoor research.
The painting belonged to the personal collection of Barbara Lambrecht. Presented by Christie's in London in February 2017 for the benefit of the Rubens Prize collection at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Siegen, it joined a private collection.
