From the flowery edge of a cliff in Pourville, the gaze descends towards the sea and a second blue coast which is lost in the mist. Painted in 1882, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm is deposited at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart under the number L 1531 and corresponds to Wildenstein 757.

Look at the work

The flowered promontory becomes a balcony above the English Channel

The foreground forms a grassy curve which advances from the left then plunges towards a small cove. The coastline starts again in the distance on the right. No character interrupts this elevated viewpoint.

Greens, yellows and roses enliven the edge of the cliff; blue, gray and purple cool the sea and distant reliefs. The short touches of the meadow oppose the calmer bands of the water.

In W757, depth arises from a simple contrast: the nearby cliff is tactile and flowery, while the distant coast dissolves into blue.

This line leads towards the cove and organizes the entire view. An outline that is too straight or too sharp would eliminate its natural movement.

The roses and yellows should appear in small scattered touches. Detailed bouquets would change the scale and divert from the coast.

Matter03

Maintain the bluish distance

The remote cape must remain less contrasted than the foreground. Strengthening it would flatten it to the same level as the nearby cliff.
