À propos de l’œuvre
Les Bateaux amarrés, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August 1888 · Arles, left bank of the Rhône
Moored Boats, F449Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Viewed from the Quai du Rhône, two boats loaded with sand intersect in emerald green water; masts, oars, footbridges and workers make up a tight network of diagonals.
Look at the work
The port of Arles seen from the quay
The light edge of the quay intersects the lower left corner. Below, the boats overlap without horizon or sky, as if placed on the green surface of the river.
Van Gogh contrasts the purplish pink hulls, the ocher yellow woods and the intense green of the water. The French flag and the small silhouettes give the scale of the scene.
Painted in Arles in August 1888, this oil on canvas measuring 55.1 × 66.2 cm is cataloged F449/JH1558. It is numbered G 61 at the Museum Folkwang in Essen.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The bird's eye view eliminates almost any traditional depth. The picture is held together by the tangle of boats, the chain of the quay and the variations in green which cause the surface to oscillate.
Diving tightens the pattern
Without sky or horizon line, the boats fill the space and seem to tip towards the viewer.
The diagonals describe the work
Rams, masts, walkways and hull edges lead the gaze from one worker to another.
The green of the water unifies the scene
Touches of turquoise, emerald and pale green surround the pink shells and yellow woods.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Museum Folkwang notice documents the location, provenance, sending to Émile Bernard and acquisition by the museum.
The left bank of the Rhône
The landing stage was near Place Lamartine, a few steps from Van Gogh's workshop in the Yellow House.
A motive described to Theo
Van Gogh evokes purplish pink boats, very green water, the tricolor flag and a worker unloading sand.
A painting sent to Bernard
Dedicated then offered to Émile Bernard in October 1888, the work was acquired for the Kunstmuseum Essen in 1912.
