Several fishing boats are pulled onto the pebble beach, their black, red, yellow and green hulls tight in the foreground. The masts and spars cross the stage diagonally in front of a sea whitened with foam, whose waves seem to prevent any exit. Painted in 1885 and signed "Claude Monet" at the bottom left, this oil on canvas measures 73.7 × 91.4 cm. It is kept at the Seattle Art Museum under number 92.88 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1028.

Look at the work

Boats stopped on the shore facing a sea which occupies almost the entire background

The hulls are seen up close and overlap. A yellow and green boat enters from the lower right edge, while black and red boats run to the left. Their bows, masts and long pieces of wood form an oblique network which gives strong tension to the beach.

Behind this dense group, the sea offers no horizontal rest. Whites, water greens, pinks and grays wind in short, thick waves. The sky is almost absent: Monet places the viewer at the level of the boats and directly confronts their weight with the hustle and bustle of the sea.

The scene opposes two forces: the heavy stability of the hulls on the pebbles and the continuous movement of the waves which temporarily prevents departure.

A tight framework on maritime work

Monet shows neither tourists nor panorama of cliffs. The boats, their equipment and the state of the sea are enough to evoke the daily life of the fishermen of Étretat.

The diagonals prevent any immobility

Masts, poles and hull edges intersect at different angles. Even stranded boats seem to be subject to a visual thrust that responds to the movement of the waves.

Bright colors in gray light

Olive yellow, orange-red and green appear on the hulls, but they are broken by browns and blacks. The foam takes on roses and greens, connecting the boats to the sea.

Their precise angles organize the composition. Too regular lines would give the impression of a calm port, contrary to the energy of this version.

Make foam thick

The waves are not a uniform background. Greenish whites, grays and pinks should remain in thick, broken touches to make the surf smell.

Provenance03

From Monet's studio to the Seattle Art Museum

Desmond Fitzgerald acquired the painting from the artist before 1905. It then passed through the McKinney-Connor family and entered the museum in 1992 thanks to a donation from Sarah Hart.
