White sails block the foreground while the port houses pile up into a compact strip under an almost empty sky. Monet returns here to Honfleur well after his first Norman campaigns, but he treats the motif as a late sketch: the facades, the masts and the bell tower are indicated by rapid gestures, with numerous clear reserves which allow the canvas to breathe.

Look at the work

The sails cut through the pool while the houses dissolve in pearl gray light

The city occupies a narrow strip in the middle of the composition. The red and blue roofs are laid in fragments, while the white, gray and ocher facades merge in places with the sky. The dark bell tower placed on the right gives the only true continuous vertical accent and prevents the whole thing from dispersing.

The boats are distributed deep by their sails. The large sail on the right edge cuts almost the entire height of the basin; two smaller shapes are placed in the center, then a dark hull advances from the left. In the water, Monet superimposes blue, green, creamy yellow and mauve in short lines. The reflections do not repeat the sails: they indicate the lapping and the light between the hulls.

The port remains recognizable with very little design: a few roofs, a bell tower, masts and the succession of sails are enough to build the entire depth.

The sky and several facades retain passages with very little cover. Filling them evenly would lose the sketching character and increase the light in the port.

A bell tower as a point of balance

Its purple spire stands in the right third and responds to thinner masts. Its inclination and height must remain fair to stabilize all the buildings.

White sails made of several colors

Blue gray, beige, pink and purple shape each sail. A uniform white would remove the volume and difference between the large sail in the foreground and those in the pool.
