Look at the work

The boats lined up give a human scale to the Étretat cliff

The hulls occupy the entire foreground and draw a succession of short diagonals. Their alignment leads towards the sea, while the clear cliff closes the right of the composition like a wall.

Monet contrasts the black, red, blue and green accents of the boats with the more diffuse tones of the beach. The overcast sky, the turquoise sea and the chalk of the cliff share colorful whites which unify the sea air.

W829 is not an empty navy: the stranded boat organization tells the story of harbor activity while measuring beach depth and cliff height.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A line of hulls in shortcut

Boats overlap and diminish rapidly. Their bows, masts and dark lines construct a more precise space than a simple horizon.

02

The cliff as a counterweight

The vertical mass of chalk occupies the right edge and balances the lateral movement of the boats. Its light color captures the light without turning white.

03

The Etretat campaign of 1883

Monet returns to the Normandy coast to paint cliffs, waves, needles and boats. W829 combines the spectacular landscape with the daily work of fishermen.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one reference photograph is used. The exact W829 file is converted into a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,411 px, without artificial enlargement and with a definition adapted to zoom.

Composition01

Separate boats without dry drawing

Each shell has its own orientation and color, but the shapes remain linked by a quick touch. Reproduction must preserve this variety without hardening the contours.

Color02

A chalk crossed by blues and roses

The shadows of the cliff are colorful. Neutral grays or uniform white would remove relief and humidity from the atmosphere.

Matter03

A high definition photograph of the canvas

The reference shot makes the frame, the impasto of the shells and the brushwork in the sky legible, useful elements for finding the original materiality.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Bemberg Foundation preserves Boats on the Beach in Étretat, oil on canvas from 1883, 65 × 81 cm, inventory 2077 and Wildenstein 829.

Location01

The beach between the cliffs

The viewpoint embraces the shore of Étretat outside the usual tourist image. Dry boats occupy the fishermen's work area.

Inventory02

The 2077 version of Toulouse

The format of 65 × 81 cm and the number 2077 identify the painting of the Bemberg Foundation, distinct from the Boats on the Beach in Étretat of 1885 kept in Chicago.

Catalog03

Wildenstein 829

This reference places the work in the Norman countryside of 1883, between studies of the rough sea, the Needle and fishing boats.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Sea blues and sandy ochres are suitable for a living room, office or seaside home. An off-white wall, natural wood and some petrol blue or red-brown details extend the accents of the boats.
