Suzanne Hoschedé stops in a meadow south of Le Pressoir, Monet's house in Giverny. Her brown hat, dark jacket and pale pink dress stand out in front of flowering trees, while a closed parasol descends along her skirt. Probably painted in the summer of 1887, this 100.6 × 70.5 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under number 2003.20.7 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1133.

Look at the work

A motionless figure captured in the middle of the light

Suzanne places herself slightly to the left of center, one hand placed at the waist and the other holding the parasol. Its silhouette crosses almost the entire height. The thin trunks frame it without forming a symmetrical decoration, and the clear path in the foreground closes behind her dress.

The foliage alternates deep greens, turquoise, blue and pinkish white. The coat receives touches of cream, peach, yellow and light blue which make it luminous without continuous contour. The purple-brown jacket and wide hat stabilize the top of the face against the bright branches.

Suzanne is not detached from the landscape like in a studio portrait: her dress, trunks and flowers are painted with the same touch, so the figure seems to belong to the light of the garden.

Keep umbrella closed along skirt

This blue-gray diagonal extends the right arm and enlivens the lower part. It must remain identifiable without becoming too detailed an accessory.
