The Blue Boat W1153hand painted reproduction

Marthe Hoschedé, on the left, faces the gaze while Blanche, seen from behind, sits closer to the bow. Their boat enters obliquely into blue and green water whose reflections blur the border between the bodies, the hull and the river. Made in 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 109 × 129 cm today belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 1153.

Look at the work

Two young women hanging in the Epte mirror

The boat occupies the entire right half and is cut by the edge. Marthe appears from the front under a green hat, her light dress animated by lilacs. Blanche turns her back on the viewer; its more vertical silhouette and hat respond to the dark curve of the hull.

The river is painted with a multitude of touches of blue gray, turquoise, pink and green. Under the figures, the reflection becomes darker and more irregular. A few white passages on the dresses and the edge of the boat concentrate the light in the middle of a moving surface.

The boat is not just a motif: it serves as a dividing line between two recognizable women and their unstable doubles, dissolved in the water beneath the boat.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diagonal that opens then cuts space

The hull rises from the center towards the right edge and draws the eye with it. Because it is truncated, the scene seems observed up close, like a surprised moment at the edge of the river.

02

Two complementary poses

Marthe looks towards the outside of the painting, Blanche towards the inside of the boat. This opposition avoids a frontal scene and gives the group a natural relationship, without strong narration.

03

Water as the real material of the painting

The reflections do not exactly reproduce the figures. They stretch them into blue, purple and brown masses, making the river an autonomous field of color and movement.

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1153 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 1024 × 858 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep Marthe on the left and Blanche seen from behind

Their respective orientation distinguishes W1153 from other boat scenes painted by Monet the same year. The poses must remain readable despite the free touch.

Color02

Preserve cold blues and greens

The river should not become uniformly turquoise. Grays, pinks and purple shadows give depth and grant water to dresses.

Matter03

Keep the boat partially out of frame

Cutting the right edge provides the impression of immediate proximity. Artificially completing the bow or refocusing the pattern would distort the composition.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Blue Boat is an oil on canvas from 1887 measuring 109 × 129 cm, listed Wildenstein 1153 and currently kept in a private collection.

Models01

Marthe and Blanche Hoschedé

Alice Hoschedé's two daughters are represented in a boat on the Epte in Giverny. They belong to the family circle that Monet painted regularly after settling in the village.

Group02

A suite dedicated to boat trips

W1153 immediately follows Norwegian W1151 and On the boat W1152 in the catalog raisonné. The three tables explore different framing, positions and reflection ratios.

Provenance03

Formerly in the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection

The painting belonged to the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection before being sold in 1976. Its current location is not made public.

  • Marthe from the front and Blanche seen from behind
  • The diagonal boat cut by the right edge
  • The blue-purple reflections under the hull
