À propos de l’œuvre

Le Bassin du commerce. Le Havre, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Tall sailboats lying down in the port of Le Havre · La Boverie

The Commerce Basin, Le Havre W294hand painted reproduction

Three large moored sailboats occupy the left of the Commercial Basin. Their masts, yards and ropes make up a tight framework in front of a green-blue sky lit with yellow. On the right, the quays, the Grand Théâtre and the masting machine blend into the evening mist, while a few boats slide on cold water crossed by reflections.

Look at the work

The rigging of the sailboats structures a pool lit by the last rays of day

The black hulls are pressed against the left platform and partially cut by the frame. Their masts rise out of the canvas, connected by crossing yards and ropes. At the foot of the boats, small silhouettes signal the activity of the port without interrupting the dark masses.

To the right, the space opens onto the water and quayfront buildings. A compass-shaped masting machine and the dome of the Grand Théâtre help identify the site. Orange-red touches on the facades indicate the sunset light.

Monet combines a very exact observation of the port with a free touch: the precision of the place remains, but it is entirely subject to time and light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A grid of masts concentrated on the left

Vertical, diagonal and horizontal rigging create a complex architecture in front of the sky. This density is compensated by the wide opening of the basin on the right.

02

A treated sunset without visible sun

The light source remains off-camera. Its effects can be read in the yellow clouds, small orange facades and light touches of the water, making the time perceptible without a central symbol.

03

A topographically precise port view

The La Boverie notice identifies the west side of the basin, the masting machine and the old Grand Théâtre. Monet retains these real details while simplifying them in a blue-green atmosphere.

The visual corresponds to the Commercial Basin, inventory BA.AMC.05b.1900.21591 from La Boverie and Wildenstein number 294. The image of 2,272 × 1,917 px has been preserved in its native definition then encoded in real WebP.

Composition01

The masts have varied thicknesses and colors

Some are almost black, others brown or gray and partially dissolved in the sky. This hierarchy retains the depth of the group of ships.

Color02

Greens and purples dominate the palette

The sky and water use cold tones that the yellows and reds of the sunset occasionally warm. Warm accents must remain rare to maintain their intensity.

Matter03

The reflections do not copy the rigging

The water is constructed in small horizontal touches of blue, mauve and cream. It responds to boats with color rather than detailed symmetry.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted around 1874, this oil on canvas measures 38 × 46 cm. It is kept in La Boverie under the inventory BA.AMC.05b.1900.21591 and classified Wildenstein 294.

Location01

The Commerce Basin in Le Havre

Completed in 1791 and first named the Ingouville basin, this basin welcomed commercial ships in the heart of the city. The bombings of the Second World War profoundly transformed its surroundings.

Dating02

Probably January 1874

According to Daniel Wildenstein, the canvas was probably painted when Monet returned to Le Havre shortly before the first impressionist exhibition. The late afternoon light distinguishes it from Impression, rising sun.

Collection03

Don Eugène Dumont in Liège in 1900

The collector Eugène Dumont offered the painting to the City of Liège with thirty-eight other paintings. The work was classified as a Treasure by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in 2012.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the density of the rigging on the left.
  • Maintain the bright opening of the pool on the right.
  • Discreetly identify the masting machine and the theater.
  • Limit orange touches to sunset effects.
