A pink, orange and light blue diagonal crosses the pool between two expanses of foliage. On the left, the red flowers stand out against lemon greens; on the right, a very dark vertical reflection descends behind large oval leaves. The panoramic format brings these two regimes of light closer together and transforms the surface of the water into a continuous field of colorful gestures.

Look at the work

The light center connects two painted aquatic areas with opposite rhythms

The left part is animated by small nervous touches. Yellow green, carmine red, blue and purple draw tight leaves and several floral foci. As the gaze reaches the center, the shapes open: the pinks, blues and oranges become wider, as if reflected light temporarily repels the vegetation.

On the right, the key changes direction. A dark green reflection falls vertically from the upper edge, while the large leaves in the foreground spread out in yellow-green ovals bordered with brown. A few pink flowers, widely spaced, prevent this mass from closing. The signature remains visible in the light border of the lower right.

The unity of the panel does not come from a dominant color, but from the continuous passage between short key, vertical reflection and wide floating curves.

Oblique circulation in the middle of the pelvis

The pink and blue passage is not centered. It slides from top to bottom changing width, giving movement to a subject without horizon or bank.

An opposition of gestures on the left and right

The small, fragmented marks on the left side respond to the dark verticals and large leaves on the right side. Preserving this difference prevents the canvas from becoming uniform.

Red accents distributed with restraint

The brightest red flowers are concentrated in the upper left quarter. Elsewhere, Monet uses only a few pinks and oranges to guide the eye without creating a regular decoration.

Sotheby's dates this painting from 1917 -1919, indicates a format of 100 × 200 cm and indicates the signature Claude Monet at the bottom right. The work appears under number 1897 in the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Collection journey02

From the Giverny family fund in New York

Staying with Michel Monet, the work passed through the Maeght Gallery and the dealer Sam Salz in 1965. She then joined several American collections, including the Fran & Ray Stark Foundation, before its acquisition by a New York collection.

Public presentations03

A painting seen at the Met, LACMA and Kimbell

The painting was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in 1966 and 1968, then at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1991. It also appears in Monet: The Late Years at the Kimbell Art Museum and at the de Young Museum in 2019.
