The Water Lilies Basin with iris, panel W1980hand painted reproduction

This twelve square meter panel envelops the eye in ash blues, mauves and water greens. The horizon line has disappeared. The leaves and flowers occupy the bottom, the reflections unfold in the center and the irises raise a few verticals on the right which prevent the scene from becoming entirely abstract.

Look at the work

A six-meter format transforms the Giverny basin into a space to look through

The gaze often begins in the group of water lilies at the bottom, where light leaves surround several pinkish-red flowers. It then slides towards the vast central interval, constructed by small blue-gray, mauve and yellow covers which give the water a slow depth.

The ends don't function as closed edges. On the left, branches descend into the reflection; on the right, irises and foliage extend the composition out of the frame. Monet thus conceives the panel as a portion of a larger environment.

At this scale, the pool is no longer looked at from a bank: the painting places the viewer in the middle of its variations of light.

A side reading rather than a single center

The six-meter format requires several viewing times. Flower groups, clear intervals and iris verticals must maintain their relative distances.

Denser material around the flowers

Water lilies are constructed in layers of blue, green, white and red. Their colored weight must contrast with the more airy passages in the center without becoming decorative.

Open boundaries at both ends

Branches and irises come out of the field. Faithful reproduction avoids creating dark borders or closed masses that would reduce the impression of immersion.

The official reference measures 1,200 × 395 px. The two photographs in the Kunsthaus measure 3,264 × 2,448 px and 6,000 × 4,000 px. The files remain at their actual resolution and have been converted to WebP without enlargement.

The Kunsthaus keeps this oil on canvas under number 1952/0010. It is neither signed nor inscribed and corresponds to Wildenstein 1980.

Provenance02

Gift of Emil Georg Bührle in 1952

After Monet's death, the work remained in the estate of Michel Monet. Bührle bought it in 1952 then gave it to the Kunsthaus Zürich the same year.

Immersive decoration03

A work linked to the great Water Lilies

From 1914, Monet resumed his monumental project. The new workshop built in 1915 allows him to paint large panels in winter, according to studies carried out in front of the Giverny basin.
