The Water Lilies Basin with iris, Zürich W1980hand painted reproduction

A mist of blue, mauve and pink covers almost the entire pool. Water lilies concentrate in the lower part, while irises rise on the right and branches descend from the upper edge. For six meters, Monet makes the horizon disappear and transforms the water into floating space.

Look at the work

The irises draw their lines to the right of a pool almost entirely absorbed by reflections

The surface is wide open and clear. Long touches of blue, gray and lilac circulate from one end to the other, with pink and pale yellow patterns. At the bottom, the leaves group around small red and white flowers which give a scale of immense extent.

On the right, the irises form several blue-green verticals which respond to the foliage hanging in the upper part. Their presence maintains a fragile distinction between the plants at the edge of the pool and their reflections. The rest of the composition remains deliberately without shore or sky.

Irises do not frame the pelvis: their stems become the last vertical landmarks in a painting where water and air merge.

A large, clear area without emptiness

Blues and grays contain many purple, pink and green covers. Simplifying them would lose the slow depth that occupies the center of the panel.

Irises limited to the right border

Their group must remain focused and vertical. Dispersing them throughout the composition would remove the asymmetry that gives movement to the panorama.

Denser water lilies at the bottom

Leaves and flowers punctually fix the surface. Their outline remains open and their density changes gradually, without regular alignment.

Zurich 1952/0010, Wildenstein 1980

The Kunsthaus Zürich dates this oil on canvas from 1914 -1922. It measures 200 × 600 cm, bears neither signature nor inscription and is registered under the 1980 number of the catalog raisonné.

Large workshop02

A format made possible from 1915

Monet had a workshop built in Giverny large enough to work with large panels in winter, based on studies carried out in front of the basin. W1980 belongs to this monumental phase.

Context03

The Great Decorations project

In 1918, Monet decided to offer the French state a set of Water Lilies in homage to Georges Clemenceau. The two large panels now kept in Zurich were painted in this same context of immersive decoration.
