The workshop boat comes almost straight towards the viewer. Its white cabin frames the dark silhouette of Monet, seated in front of his easel or his equipment, while the reflection of the boat descends in long undulations into the Seine. The vertical format brings the boat closer and transforms the painter's work tool into a real indirect self-portrait.

Look at the work

The white cabin and its reflection form a central axis

The dark bow is placed in the middle of the canvas, under an open rectangular cabin. The two white side panels frame Monet, seen in profile or three-quarters in the shadows. The banks remain blurred behind this floating architecture.

The reflection occupies almost the entire lower half. The whites of the cabin become gray and purple bands, interrupted by blue wrinkles. A small light shape suspended at the front punctuates this vertical axis.

Monet paints his workplace from the outside: the boat, the painter and their reflection become a single motif on the water.

The boat is approaching almost in the axis, unlike more common profile views. This position tightens the hull and gives full height to the reflection.

The black cabin opening surrounds Monet's silhouette. The white uprights function like the edges of a small portrait integrated into the landscape.

Reflections longer than the object

The distorted image of the boat descends deep into the water. Its undulations give movement to a very stable central composition.

A few light red accents are enough to indicate the face and hands. The white cabin remains the main contrast.

The banks are not symmetrical

Tree masses and their reflections change on either side, preventing frontality from becoming rigid.

The vertical bands gradually break into horizontal touches, in accordance with the wrinkles of the Seine.
