Look at the work

Two workers load a small peat barge

In the foreground, the black barge stretches almost the entire width. The woman in the orange blouse stands out in her dark opening, leaning towards the cargo.

On the shore, the man pushes a wheelbarrow along a light board. The green canal, low embankments and gray-blue sky form wide horizontal bands around this oblique circulation.

Peat barge with two figures F21/JH415 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 37 × 55.5 cm painted in the Drenthe in October 1883. It is kept at the Drents Museum under number P1997-0053.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The barge, walkway and path determine the entire perspective. In a very small palette, Van Gogh uses the orange blouse and light wood as two points of light that make the work readable.

01

The barge forms a horizontal mass

Its almost black shell stabilizes the foreground. The oblique edges lead directly towards the woman and suggest the depth of the cargo.

02

The footbridge connects the two figures

The long board starts from the shore, crosses the canal and leads towards the boat. It transforms the two separate workers into stages of the same load.

03

Two colorful accents are enough

The woman's orange clothing and the ocher trail of the path emerge from the dark greens. Van Gogh thus creates a hierarchy without lightening the entire landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Drents Museum presents this painting as one of the peaks of Van Gogh's short stay in Drenthe, a period when he chose to devote himself fully to painting rural life.

Work

Loading described precisely

The woman stacks the blocks in the barge while the man pushes his wheelbarrow onto the gangway. Each posture corresponds to a concrete stage of transporting peat.

Drenthe

One of the rare preserved oils from 1883

Van Gogh painted several studies during his time in the peatlands, but few are located today. F21 remains one of the main public works of this campaign.

Collection

Acquired by the Drents Museum in 1997

The painting joins Assen's collection with the number P1997-0053. Catalogues raisonnés identify it as F21 and JH415.
