Red, green and orange boats are moored in front of a row of Dutch trees and houses. Their very high masts carry long flames that the wind deploys in a blue sky covered with clouds. Monet brings together here the activity of the port, the color of the hulls and the mobility of the atmosphere in a more constructed image than many of his studies of Zaandam.

The colorful hulls form a port scene in the open wind

In the foreground, several boats are pressed against black stakes. Their red and orange hulls overlap, separated by green and yellow bands. Small figures appear near the bank; their scale makes the height of the masts which cross almost the entire sky noticeable.

The long horizontal flames all indicate a sustained wind. They extend the masts and create a supple writing above the brown sails. On the right, light green, pink and brick facades reintroduce the geometry of the houses, while the water mixes the colors of the quay in short reflections.

The boats remain docked, but the flames, clouds and reflections set the entire canvas in motion.

A four-month Dutch campaign

Monet stayed in Zaandam in 1871 and created around twenty-four medium-sized paintings there. The port, the mills and the houses by the water became his main subjects.

The museum notice highlights these narrow bands which make a temporary weather condition visible and reinforce the impression of a moment observed on site.

Provenance03

A story that begins at Durand-Ruel

The painting was acquired in 1871 by Paul Durand-Ruel. It then passed into the collection of banker Ernest May before joining the Hasso Plattner Collection.
