Look at the work

A workplace on the Seine

The clear bank enters diagonally from the left and leads towards the hull. The large roof of the boat is reflected in water treated in blues, grays and greens.

Van Gogh reduces the activity to a few specific signs: silhouettes on the quay, colorful linen, fireplace and small canoe. The horizon remains low and lets the sky breathe.

Painted in Asnières during the summer of 1887, this small oil on canvas of approximately 19 × 27 cm is F311/JH1325. It is numbered 83.25 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The canvas combines social observation and the search for light. The boat is an industrial facility, but its reflections, its green roof and the colored linen make it a very subtle pictorial motif.

01

The bank leads to the boat

Its clear diagonal opens the foreground and places the viewer at the towpath.

02

The roof becomes a large mass

Green gray, blue and cream build the volume without unnecessary architectural detail.

03

The reds punctuate the cold range

The linen and the little colorful marks awaken the whole dominated by the blue water and sky.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Van Gogh Museum identified this boat as a floating laundry operated by a couple named Lebreton, a type of facility once common on the Seine.

Function

A floating laundry

Laundry was washed directly by the river; these establishments used a lot of bleach and contributed to pollution.

Scale

A boat about forty meters

Van Gogh condenses this long structure on a very small canvas, without losing the readability of the volumes.

Collection

Paul Mellon, 83.25

The work is housed at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon.
