On the boat W1152hand painted reproduction

Suzanne and Blanche Hoschedé slide on the Epte in a boat that Monet boldly cuts by the right edge. The water fills the entire format: blue and pink in the upper part, green, brown and deep blue around the boat and its reflection. Signed and dated Claude Monet 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 145.5 × 133.5 cm belongs to the Matsukata collection of the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo, where it bears the number P.1959-0148 and the Wildenstein reference 1152.

Look at the work

Two figures and a boat absorbed by the surface of the water

The young woman on the left faces the viewer, while the one on the right is seen from behind. Their light dresses and hats stand out against the dark hull. The framing shows neither bank nor horizon: the boat enters from the right and seems to continue outside the painting.

Above the figures, the water reflects a clear sky with pale blue, pink and mauve passages. Under the hull, the reflection darkens to navy blue, brown and green. Short horizontal touches make the silhouette lapping, while bright green and vermilion accents awaken the silhouettes.

Monet no longer separates the family scene from the landscape: dresses, boat and reflections are subjected to the same movement of color, as if the characters themselves became a vibration of the Epte.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately cut framing

The hull disappears at the right edge and the viewpoint plunges slightly towards the water. The museum brings this daring construction closer to the photography and Japanese prints that Monet collected.

02

Two registers of light on the water

The upper half receives the clear reflections of the sky; the lower half concentrates the shadows of the boat and the figures. This opposition gives depth without resorting to a horizon line.

03

Figures melted into the landscape

The faces remain poorly detailed, but the dresses, hats and positions are immediately readable. Monet favors their colorful accord with water rather than an individualized portrait.

Reference image

Read this specific version

A single exact image of W1152 is used throughout the sheet and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 2003 × 2200 px and retains the native definition of reproduction without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the boat cut on the right

This framing is one of the hallmarks of W1152. Refocusing the boat would destroy the tension between the visible scene and what continues off-camera.

Color02

Preserve blue, pink and green accord

The light colors at the top should remain bright without becoming uniform pastel. The greens and vermilions close to the figures provide the necessary contrasts.

Matter03

Keep the dark reflection under the hull

This blue-brown mass anchors the boat and responds to the dresses. It must remain fragmented by touches of water so as not to form a compact shadow.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The National Museum of Western Art documents On the Boat, oil on canvas signed and dated 1887, 145.5 × 133.5 cm, inventory P.1959-0148 and Wildenstein catalog 1152.

Models01

Suzanne and Blanche Hoschedé on the Epte

The museum notice identifies Alice Hoschedé's two daughters. Monet then painted several scenes of his family in the immediate vicinity of Giverny, along this tributary of the Seine.

Series02

One of the most accomplished compositions of the boat group

The museum distinguishes W1152 by its high degree of completion. The interest is not only in the figures: the real study concerns the moving harmony of light and shadow on the surface of the water.

Provenance03

A work from the Matsukata collection

Kojiro Matsukata acquired it from Monet around December 1921. After World War II, the painting was transferred to the Japanese government and entered the museum in 1959.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1152 version
  • Suzanne facing the gaze and Blanche seen from behind
  • The hull cut by the right edge
  • The transition from pink and light blue to navy blue reflections

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This large, almost square format is suitable for a living room, bedroom or reception area. A sage green, gray blue or cream wall and a dark frame extend the depth of the water and the softness of the dresses.
