Red hulls organize a pool filled with air, water and masts

The two central boats respond to each other without being parallel. The first, redder, presents its side to the viewer; the second shifts to the right. A forest of masts and very fine ropes connects their group to the sky.

The left bank combines an ocher house, two tall poplars and a line of small figures. White birds punctuate the water. In the distance, the light sails diminish with perspective, while the white bow of the right edge is deliberately cropped.

The red of the hulls is not a detail: it gives the blue of the sky and the Seine all its intensity.

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A colorful center surrounded by open spaces

The shells concentrate the warmest tones in the middle of the painting. Around them, the sky and water create broad blue breaths, animated by clouds, sails and reflections.

Verticals that connect sky and river

The masts pass through almost the entire useful height. Their finesse contrasts with the thicker touches of the hulls and water, giving a firm structure to the scene without immobilizing it.

Reflections constructed in fragments

The red extends under the boats in short lines mixed with blue and green. These flashes do not reproduce shapes like a mirror: they reflect the light movement of the surface.

The two reds must remain distinct

The left shell tends toward orange vermilion, while the right one contains more brown and shade. Their difference avoids a uniform block.

The severed bow gives proximity

The boat entering from the right edge is essential for framing. Removing it or bringing it entirely back into the image would make the view more conventional and distant.

Matter03

The sky responds to water without duplicating it

Both areas share blues, but the water receives more greens, purples and horizontal lines. The sky remains lighter and cloudy.

Painted in 1875, this oil on canvas measuring 61.8 × 82.5 cm is kept at the Fogg Museum of the Harvard Art Museums under the 1951.54 inventory and classified Wildenstein 369.

Between 1871 and 1878, the banks of the Seine offered Monet boats, bridges, walks and reflections. Here, modern nautical activity is shown as a natural part of the landscape.

From Faure to Maurice Wertheim

The provenance published by Harvard mentions in particular Jean-Baptiste Faure, Durand-Ruel, James F. Sutton, Émile Laffon and Paul Rosenberg before the acquisition by Maurice Wertheim in 1943.

Collection03

The Maurice Wertheim legacy of 1951

The painting entered the Fogg Museum by the bequest of Maurice Wertheim, a Harvard graduate in 1906. Its official credit retains this origin with the number 1951.54.
