Fishing boats W1026hand painted reproduction

Two fishing boats with red-brown sails occupy the foreground and background, while small sails move away near the horizon. Around them, the blue-green sea is covered with rapid curves, milky whites and dark reflections that make each boat unstable. Painted and signed in 1885, this 50 × 62 cm oil on canvas belongs to John & Marine van Vlissingen Fine Arts and corresponds to Wildenstein 1026.

Look at the work

The red sails advance in a sea seized in full movement

The main boat is placed in the right third. Its high, inclined and almost vertical sail contrasts with a very low black hull; the reflection under the hull immediately comes undone in green, purple and white curls.

A second, smaller boat shifts to the left and opens diagonally towards the sails of the horizon. Monet uses the reduction in sizes, but also the rarefaction of dark accents, to make the gaze retreat into a space without visible coast.

The depth comes less from a drawn perspective than from the rhythm of the boats: large, medium, then almost signs, they measure the distance in the middle of always moving water.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Warm sails in a cold range

The red, purple and black browns of the sails stand out against the turquoise blues and greens of the sea. This contrast makes the boats readable without drawing regular contours.

02

A surface made of rapid movements

The curves and discontinuous lines change direction around the hulls. They suggest swell, wake and reflections without enclosing the water in a repetitive pattern.

03

A high and very light horizon

The strip of sky remains narrow and cloudy. This position gives more space to the sea and reinforces the feeling of being at boat level rather than facing a distant panorama.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single public image is preserved at its reliable definition of 1,600 × 1,309 px then encoded as a real WebP. No artificial enlargement or generative accentuation is applied.

Composition01

Respect the gap between the two main boats

The void of water that separates them builds diagonal movement. Bringing them together would transform the stage into a compact group and reduce its depth.

Color02

Keep the sails red-brown, never uniformly black

Their material has purple, red and blue passages. These variations give volume and connect them to the colored reflections under the shells.

Matter03

Keep the loops and breaks from the sea

The features should not become regular decorative waves. Their irregularity precisely reflects the fleeting nature noted in the Van Gogh Museum cartel.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Data from John & Marine van Vlissingen Fine Arts and the Wildenstein catalog identify Fishing boats, oil on canvas signed from 1885, 50 × 62 cm, under number W1026.

Execution01

A maritime print captured quickly

During its exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum, the cartel emphasized that Monet had to work quickly: boats, sea and light changed simultaneously, and the touch retains this instability.

State02

A work signed and held to be completed

Despite his spontaneous appearance and his large visible reservations, Monet signed the painting. The sketched character therefore belongs to its desired effect, not to a simple preparatory state.

Collection03

A work preserved in the Netherlands

The painting is now owned by John & Marine van Vlissingen Fine Arts and was featured in the exhibition Long Live Impressionism! from the Van Gogh Museum.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1026 version
  • The large red-brown sail of the right third
  • Boat diagonal to horizon
  • Green, purple and white reflections under the shells

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This energetic navy is suitable for a living room, office or dining room. A petrol blue, pearl gray or sea green wall and a walnut frame enhance the contrast between warm sails and cold seas.
